That drawer full of receipts? It won't magically sort itself.

Keeping track of your expenses doesn't have to be painful.

You just need to be consistent.

Every receipt you loose, every mile you dont record, and every allowable expense you won't claim means higher tax liability.

Small habits now mean less chaos later and more money in your pocket.

Did you wait till January to do your tax Self-Assessment? Did you think oh NO, that's a lot of money I have to pay.

That’s why now is the perfect time to take a minute (or ten) to look at your finances for 2025 - 2026.

Check what’s coming up, review your self-assessment, and plan ahead.

A little preparation now saves you from a last-minute panic and keeps more of your hard-earned money in your pocket.

Think of it as giving your future self a calm cup of tea instead of a tax headache. January planning = peace of mind.

Ever asked your accountant to magically lower your tax… the day before the deadline? Yeah, that face you see in the meme? That’s real.

We are good, but not magicians😅

You can only reduce your tax in the same tax year. Last-minute requests? Not happening.

Plan ahead, keep more of your hard-earned money, and save your accountant from that bewildered look. A little forward thinking goes a long way.

Of all the Christmas surprises you could get, an unexpected bill is the last thing you want.

The year-end scramble can be avoided long before the deadline by adopting a few small habits:

• Keep records up to date, as and when they change.
• Check in monthly, at a bear minimum.
• Flag anything unusual as and when you notice it.

These habits, along with adopting 'Making Tax Digital' as early as possible, will get you ahead and make your next year-end feel much calmer.

Reach out and arrange a quick chat with the team at Brush Up Accounting to discuss the simple steps you can take.

(Future-you will be very grateful!)

Cash flow doesn’t only get tricky when something’s gone wrong. Often, it’s the opposite.

The business is busy, growing, or taking on bigger clients.

That’s usually when money moves in new patterns, and the bank balance starts doing unexpected things.

If you’ve noticed:
• invoices taking longer to get paid
• busy months still feeling tight
• or new projects creating timing gaps

A cash flow review can give you a bit more breathing room.

It’s a chance to look ahead, spot pinch points early, and confidently plan ahead.

Thinking about your own cash flow, what’s the one thing you’d love more predictability around?

The difference between a stressful tax season and a smooth one?
Usually just a few small habits:

✓ Snap receipts as you go

✓ Reconcile weekly

✓ Keep business and personal accounts separate

✓ Don’t ignore that HMRC email

These tiny changes save you hours, maybe days, when the deadlines loom...

and keep your accountant smiling too! 😁

This is Saffie. She loves a good nap and doesn’t move unless there’s something in it for her.

Sometimes, I can be guilty of the same — reacting only when things become urgent. It can be so stressful.

There is a deadline that's getting close:
🗓️ Company directors must verify their identity with Companies House by 18th November.

It’s quite simple to do, but missing the deadline could cause unnecessary stress (and no one wants that).

If you own a Limited company, don't do Saffie. Don’t leave it until the last minute.

I’ve lost count of how many clients have opened our first call with something like: “I know this should be simple… I just haven’t been able to face it”

They’re talking about their tax return. But also everything around it.

The unopened emails.

The pile of receipts in the drawer.

The mental loop that goes, “Why didn’t I just do this months ago?”

They’re not lazy. They’re not careless.
They’re overwhelmed – often quietly, often for a long time.

And when your brain works differently (like mine does, and many of my clients), that overwhelm doesn’t shift just because the deadline gets closer.

In fact, it usually gets louder.

Over the years, I’ve worked with ceramicists, dog breeders, landlords and plenty of other business owners who are brilliant at their craft but feel completely stuck when it comes to the numbers.

The truth is, your tax return isn’t actually that complicated.

What is complicated is untangling all the emotional stuff that’s built up around it.

That’s the bit no one talks about. But it’s the part I take seriously.

I’ve shared a short carousel with a breakdown of why tax returns feel so hard, and how I work differently to help you get them done.

And if tax season’s already weighing on you, that first step might be a conversation.

ADHD and business?
It’s not chaos — it’s just a different operating system.

A lot of our clients with ADHD are brilliant at what they do…
But running the actual business side? That’s where the wheels can fall off.

Not because they’re lazy. Or disorganised.
Because their brain is trying to manage a million tabs open at once — and finances always seem to end up in the “deal with later” folder.

💡 That’s where we come in.
We help simplify the chaos — no judgement, no jargon.
We tailor systems around how you work, not how the textbooks say you should.

One of our favourite wins?
A client who hadn’t invoiced in three months because the admin felt too overwhelming. We broke it down, set up reminders, and turned it into a quick weekly ritual.
Now? They’re getting paid, feeling in control, and have finally stopped apologising for being “bad at business.”

Tracking your expenses can be surprisingly simple, even if you have a busy brain. You just need to be consistent.

Make it simple for yourself:
1. Use Hubdoc, which is free with Xero, to snap receipts for all your expenses.
2. Use separate account for your business, so that you can clearly see what is business related expense.
3. Review your expenses at the end of the month.
