Most trades businesses don’t realise this until it’s too late.

CIS and domestic reverse charge VAT isn’t “just admin”, it’s where small mistakes quietly build up until HMRC or your subcontractors come knocking.

Wrong deductions.
Materials included when they shouldn’t be.
Or subcontractors not properly verified at all.

Individually, it doesn’t feel like much.
At year end? It turns into missing rebates, penalties and conversations you really don’t want to be having.

And then there’s the deadline on the 19th each month - miss it and it’s an automatic £100 fine.

This is exactly the kind of admin that quietly drains time, money and focus from actually running your jobs.

If any of this feels familiar, it’s worth getting it checked properly before it becomes a year-end problem, get in touch - https://links.oompf.global/widget/booking/TdokGrCVkT0oPbuoXLyr

Most business owners I speak to are working hard, revenue is coming in, things are moving in the right direction. But when i ask them about these 4 things:

Gross margin
Net margin
Cash position
Drawings

There’s silence.
That’s not a criticism, not everyone knows everything about finances and numbers when they start a business.

But here’s the reality, how can you make good decisions about your business when you don’t even understand these numbers.

Know your numbers, protect your business and stop making decisions based on guesswork.

You might’ve seen some big news from Rachel Reeves today

Looks pretty positive; but let’s read the small print first.

There are two announcements from today's statement worth your attention.

1️⃣ VAT cut on attractions

VAT on theme parks, zoos, museums, fairs and children's tickets at cinemas, theatre and soft play drops from 20% to 5% from 25 June to 1 September. Children's meals in restaurants and cafes too.

Sounds great for families right?

Here's the catch. There's no obligation on operators to pass a penny of it on. No enforcement, no monitoring, no clawback. Merlin and the rest don't have the systems, the coordination, or frankly the will to drop ticket prices.

I reckon they'll trouser the lot.

We've seen this film before. Sunak cut hospitality VAT to 5% in 2020, the trade body openly told members they didn’t have to reduce prices.

And most didn't.

The head of Visit Cornwall said the quiet part out loud at the time: “the cut was to support business, not holidaymakers.”

A tax break dressed up as a family handout. Classic.

The second one is actually pretty solid

2️⃣ Mileage rate is up from 45p to 55p

This one actually matters. The approved rate hasn't budged since 2011, so a 10p uplift is long overdue. Backdated to April 2026, which means real money back in pockets.

On 10,000 business miles, that's an extra £1,000 tax-free in your hands.

What to do now

If you claim mileage from your employer or through your own company, get your April to date claims recalculated. Don't wait until your accountant spots it next year.

One genuine win, one bit of theatre - to be honest, it’s better than what I’ve seen

Do you actually know your business numbers?

Most businesses are not aware of what their numbers are and this is why businesses can fail.

If I had to only manage 4 numbers in your business, this is what i’d manage:

- Gross margin - the percentage of revenue left over after you subtract your company's direct costs
- Net margin - shows overall profitability after all expenses, including operating costs, interest, and taxes, are deducted.
- Cash in the bank - the money a business has at its disposal, either on hand or in easily-accessible bank accounts
- Drawings - the withdrawal of cash, inventory or other assets by a sole trader or partner from their business for personal use

Do you know these numbers in your business?

No? Let’s chat 🔗 https://links.oompf.global/widget/booking/TdokGrCVkT0oPbuoXLyr

Your business can make £1M and still be broke.

Turnover looks impressive, but profit tells the really story.

I’ve seen businesses turning over £1M+ with less financial security than those doing £300K because they weren’t tracking the numbers that actually matter.

Gross margin. Net margin. Cash in the bank. Drawings.

Know your numbers, protect your business and stop making decisions based on guesswork.

Your accountant knows your business better than you do.
As they should, but you should know them just as well
It’s your business.

You wouldn’t expect your personal trainer to do your workout for you.
They are the expert in ex*****on, but you’re still the one who lives with the result.

They should absolutely know your numbers inside out. That’s their job.
But you should still understand them well enough to know what story your business is telling.

Why it matters to know your numbers as a business owner

Yeh, it’s easy to just send over your numbers every month to your accountant.

But here’s the truth: if you can’t read your own financials, you’re flying blind. And no matter how good your accountant is, they can’t make all your decisions for you. Most accountants will work with you, so it’s important you know what they are talking about.

Knowing your numbers means:

- Knowing whether you’re actually profitable, or busy
- Which clients or products are making you money, which ones are costing you more
- How much cash do you have
- Can you afford to invest or scale

An accountant spots the risks and helps you plan, but ultimately it’s you that makes the calls.

So you think you’re a business owner?

But be honest, do you actually know what’s going on with your numbers?

Most business owners just pass off the data to their accountant. They sort through it, maybe give you a call every now and then.

But do you even know what it means? How your business is really doing, what actions you need to take next?

That’s the first thing we fix as part of our Profit Reset programme, inside our Clarity module. We show you exactly what your numbers mean.

Your gross margin, your real profit. Numbers you can actually be proud of.

So let’s chat. We’ll show you what’s really going on.

Most business owners have no idea this is even being discussed…

Soon HMRC could be checking every transaction you make through your business, that includes:

- director’s loan accounts
- personal spend through the business
- every movement of money in and out
