They never tell you this at drama school, but being an actor comes with responsibilities beyond performing.

The most important one being tax, and while it might not be glamorous, knowing how tax works can save you money.

Most actors in the UK fall into the “self-employed” bracket, which means you find your own work and manage your income.

Everyone who earns pays Income Tax, and the more you earn, the higher the percentage you will pay.

Are you a content creator, artist, musician or podcaster?

If so, tax may not be the most exciting topic on your list.

But, if you earn money from your creative work, you are effectively running a business in HMRC’s eyes.

However, with the Trading Allowance, you can earn up to £1,000 each tax year without notifying HMRC.

Do you earn income from being an Influencer?

The growth of social media has created a whole new world of career opportunities, with the role of influencers at the forefront.

But once you start receiving payments or gifts as an influencer, you need to consider your tax obligations.

If you regularly create content with a strategy and expect to make money, HMRC will likely view you as “trading”.

Once your earnings exceed the £1,000 Trading Allowance or you start working with brands consistently, you must register with HMRC.

What do you know about Final Dividends?

Final Dividends are payments from company profits to shareholders after the financial year ends.

The company’s Articles of Association determine how the company approves the dividend.

Under the standard model articles, directors recommend the amount and shareholders declare the final dividend.

Shareholders then use an ordinary resolution, which means a simple majority supports the decision.

Have you heard of Interim Dividends?

Interim Dividends let a company distribute profits before shareholders approve a Final Dividend.

Under standard model Articles of Association, directors can decide to pay Interim Dividends.

Therefore, shareholders do not normally need a separate resolution.

Companies can also pay more than one interim dividend during a financial year.

How well do you understand Dividends?

Dividends are payments that a limited company makes to its shareholders from its profits.

These profits remain after the company pays all expenses, taxes and other financial commitments.

When shareholders receive a dividend, they gain a direct return on their investment.

However, a company can only pay dividends when it holds enough profit to do so.

When was the last time you checked your Articles of Association?

Your Articles of Association set out how your business runs, while defining the roles of directors and shareholders.

The Articles usually cover:
🧩 How directors make decisions
🧩 How shareholders vote
🧩 How meetings take place
🧩 How shares are issued or transferred
🧩 How directors are appointed or removed
🧩 How profits are distributed through dividends

Additionally, the Articles help prevent misunderstandings, with guidance on how to handle common situations within the business.

Do you find normal accounting boring?

Well, forensic accounting is a specialist area which focuses on examining financial information in detail to answer questions about disputes and suspected fraud.

Unlike routine accounting, forensic accountants looks beyond the surface, focusing on uncovering the truth rather than simply reporting figures.

A forensic accountant's work often includes:
🧩 Investigating fraud (such as embezzlement or false reporting)
🧩 Reviewing financial records and contracts
🧩 Identifying inconsistencies and unusual patterns
🧩 Reconstructing missing or incomplete data
🧩 Preparing reports for legal use
🧩 Acting as an expert witness in court

They focus on anything that does not match the financial story, as who doesn't love a bit of detective work?

Do you know what Chargeable Gains are?

Chargeable gains are the profit you make when you dispose of a capital asset.

When you receive the money, HMRC first decides whether it counts as income or capital:
🧩 Income includes earnings from employment or other trading activities
🧩 Capital includes profits from selling assets you already own

This distinction matters because both options follow different tax rules and rates.

Do you understand Stealth Taxes?

Stealth tax is a term for describing taxes or charges that are not immediately obvious.

These taxes usually increase your tax bill without official tax rates changing.

Instead of announcing a new tax, the Government adjusts the relevant thresholds or allowances.

As a result, many people pay more tax without realising it.
