Pay received by a worker while they are on holiday should reflect what they would have earned if they had been at work and working.

From 1 January 2024, the components which must be included when calculating ‘normal’ rate of pay are defined in regulations.

The following payments must be included in the 4 weeks of normal (regulation 13 leave) holiday pay:

*payments, including commission payments, intrinsically linked to the performance of tasks which a worker is contractually obliged to carry out

*payments relating to professional or personal status relating to length of service, seniority or professional qualifications

*other payments, such as overtime payments, which have been regularly paid to a worker in the 52 weeks preceding the calculation date

Whether bonuses are included in normal holiday pay depends on the nature of the bonus.

To sum up, a worker shouldn’t suffer financially when on leave, so the following should be taken into account when calculating the weekly average for holiday pay:

*commission that’s directly linked to performance of contractually mandated tasks
*bonuses that are directly linked to performance
*overtime if it’s mandatory or paid often enough to be considered part of their normal pay

The way we pay statutory sick pay (SSP) to employees changed back in April 2026.

We’ve set out the main changes that went into effect as a reminder

SSP is now payable from day one, therefore employees now benefit from immediate financial support even for a short term illness, as the removal of the three day waiting period has been removed.

All employees are entitled to SSP, regardless of earnings, as the lower earnings limit (minimum earnings of £125 per week, in 25-26) has been removed

SSP should be calculated at 80% of average weekly earnings, or the flat rate (whichever is lower)

The new SSP weekly rate is £123.25, daily rates vary depending on how many days a week your employee works, also known as ‘qualifying days’

Employees can claim SSP for a maximum of 28 weeks

We’ve transported our Payroll Team back to the 80’s for National Payroll Week 😂 and one team member actually began her payroll career in the 80’s! How amazing is that!

Payroll has evolved significantly over the years, here are some payroll facts from the 80’s

The average annual UK salary rose through the decade, reaching an average of £11,000 by the end of the 1980’s

The digital PAYE system began replacing manual processing in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. Payroll management started to get a little easier and more affordable.

The basic rate of income tax started at 30% in 1980 and was cut down to 25% by 1988

In 1987 the Conservative Government launched the ‘payroll giving’ scheme, which allowed employees to make charitable donations via payroll, whilst benefiting from tax relief on the amount donated

Because regional tax databases were separate, employees with more than one job often had to coordinate tax codes manually through cross-office paper letters. Nowadays, the process of allocating tax codes across multiple employments is fully automated and centralised.

In the 80’s multiple payroll software providers emerged, each wanting to find the latest technology to streamline payroll processing.

A big thank you to BoxForm for their help with the design and supply of our new furniture. They helped bring our ideas to life.

We’re really pleased with how it’s turned out and thought we’d share a few photos of the transformation!

We’re proud to have hosted our first quarterly breakfast event at our recently renovated offices this week.

Many thanks to our speakers, Fay Cornelius and Janelle Carter jones, who talked us through the changes to the IHT landscape which are effecting business owners.

The event was well attended despite very warm temperatures, and we devoured some delicious pastries from 🥐

We look forward to the next one!'
