HMRC is giving employers advance notice that the Department for Education (DfE) has introduced a new student loan Plan type 5. Repayments are due to begin from 6 April 2026.

Key details include that:

• Plan 5 will be operated and collected in the same way as current plan types 1, 2 and 4

• the earliest repayments will start for PAYE is 6 April 2026

• the annual repayment threshold will be £25,000

• repayments will be made at 9% on earnings over the £25,000 threshold

• employers will start to receive student loan start notices from March 2026 for Plan 5 borrowers due to go into repayment from April 2026

• Plan 5 is for those who applied to Student Finance England and started courses from August 2023 onwards

Software developers are working on payroll updates due to be in place by 6 April 2026. Guidance and forms will be updated by 6 April 2026.

Employers are reminded that they can:

• only deduct one plan type at a time, Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 or, from April 2026, Plan 5

• deduct the postgraduate loan at the same time as one student loan plan type — Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 or Plan 5

• The current way of processing payroll (PAYE) was introduced in 1944

• The current way to report real time information (RTI) was introduced in 2013

• It is said that Albert Einstein quoted “the hardest thing to understand in the world is the income tax”

• The word “salary” is believed to have come from the Latin word “salarium”, which referred to money paid to Roman soldiers for the purchase of salt, which was a valued product

• The term “payroll” emerged around the 1750s, combining “pay” (as verb) and “roll” (a noun), referring to a list of periodic payments made to workers

We are so incredibly proud of our team at CJH for completing the Gower Peninsula (half marathon) Mighty Hike on Saturday. It was extremely challenging, not helped by the poor weather conditions, however we powered through and all made it to the finish line in one piece.

We would like to thank each and every one of you who supported us in raising essential funds for Macmillan Cancer Research, which currently stands at a massive £3,670.00. We are overwhelmed by your generosity (and confidence in us!)

We have attached some photos of our journey, as you will see, we kept smiling through the pain 😊

A huge thanks to Estate Capital Financial Management Limited for inviting us to their annual Croquet Day last week .

The pressure was on having won the event last year. But the team didn't let us down, reaching the semi final and losing to the overall and worthy winners of the day...Estate Capital!

It was great to see lots of money raised for the Lord Mayors chosen appeal 'Going the Extra Mile for Cancer'. An appeal which aims to raise money for The South West Wales Cancer Charity, who do an incredible job providing a range of life saving cancer treatments in Singleton Hospital.
