Over the next week there will be some payroll changes for businesses. These will be as follows;

💷 Minimum Wage Increases

As of today, the National Minimum Wage has increased for employees. The new rates are as follows;

Employees aged 21 and over £12.71 per hour
Employees aged 18 to 20 £10.85 per hour
Employees aged under 18 £8.00 per hour
Apprentices £8.00 per hour

🤒 Changes to Sick Pay (SSP)

Statutory Sick Pay rules are also changing as from the 6th April 2026.

Firstly, employees will be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay from day one of their illness. Previously, an employee had to wait three working days to receive any sick pay but the waiting days are being abolished from next week.

In addition, low earners will now be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay. Previously, if an employee earned less than £125 per week then they weren't entitled to any sick pay but the new rules are that employees will receive either;

a) £123.25 per week or
b) 80% of their average weekly earnings

Employees will be entitled to the lower amount of the two figures.

If you need any support in respect of your payroll or understanding any of these changes then we are happy to help. Please feel free to call us on (01792) 346222 or even send us a WhatsApp message through our page if this is easier for you.

Limited Company Directors – time to rethink your salary for 2025/26?

The recent Budget brought changes that make Employers' National Insurance (NIC) more of a headache—especially for sole directors.

So, what’s the most tax-efficient way to pay yourself now?

💡 If you employ staff and qualify for the Employment Allowance then the advice is to stick with a salary of £12,570 per year (that’s £1,047.50 per month). You’ll stay within your personal allowance and avoid NIC.

💡 If you’re a sole director with no other employees then Employers NIC starts kicking in this year!

– At £12,570 per year, you’ll pay around £1,135 per year in Employers’ NIC.

– To reduce this, consider dropping your salary to £542 per month (just over the Lower Earnings Limit). This keeps the annual Employers NIC bill down to around £225 per year and still protects your state pension record.

💡 Want to keep the higher salary and avoid the NIC hit?

You could bring someone else such as a spouse, a child (if aged 13 or over) or an alternative additional employee —but they must:

✅ Be doing actual work for the company
✅ Be paid a fair, commercial rate
✅ Earn at least minimum wage

This isn’t about dodging tax—it’s about making your business more efficient and keeping more of what you earn.

📌 As always, this is general advice—your situation might be different. Speak to your accountant before making changes.

📞 If you’d like to discuss the most tax-efficient salary for your circumstances then feel free to get in touch.

🚨 Minimum Wage Has Gone Up! 🚨

A quick heads-up to all business owners – the National Minimum Wage rates have increased as of this week! 💼💰

Make sure your payroll reflects the new rates:

👉 £12.21 per hour for ages 21+
👉 £10.00 per hour for 18–20 year olds
👉 £7.55 for under 18s & apprentices

Please note apprentices are only entitled to the apprentice rate if they are either aged under 19 years of age or if they are still in their first year of their apprenticeship.

Getting it right is important – for your team and your business. If you need a hand checking your figures or updating your payroll then please feel free to call us on (01792) 346222 or drop us a message through our page.

📢 Budget 2024/25 Highlights for UK Businesses, Employers, and Individuals

Today’s budget announcement brings several important changes set to impact businesses, employers, and individuals from April 2025. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect! 📈💼

🔹 Employment

The National Minimum Wage will increase from April 2025:

Employees aged 21 and over: £12.21 per hour (up from £11.44)

Employees aged 18-20: £10.00 per hour (up from £8.60)

Employees under 18 / Apprentices: £7.55 per hour (up from £6.40)

➡️There will be increased employment rights for employees. These are not in force at present but eventually will involve;

Unfair dismissal rights from employees from day one of their employment (rather than after two years of service)

Employees being able to receive Statutory Sick Pay from day one of an employee’s illness (rather than the employee waiting three days until SSP begins) and removing the lower earnings level to receive this

Increased rights for Statutory Maternity Leave and Statutory Paternity Leave

We will discuss these in much more detail when these changes are to be introduced! 📅

🔹 Business Changes

Employers’ National Insurance will increase from 13.8% to 15%, and the threshold at which Employers’ NI applies will decrease from £9,100 to £5,000.

To support small businesses, the Employer’s Allowance will increase from £5,000 to £10,000 per year. This means small businesses with up to four full-time employees on NMW will not pay Employers' NI from April 2025. 🌱

Corporation Tax will remain capped at 25% for the duration of this Parliament.

Business Rates: Retail, hospitality and leisure businesses will benefit from a 40% deduction, and the small business tax multiplier is frozen for next year.

Overdue Tax Interest: HMRC will raise interest on overdue tax payments to encourage timely payments.

🔹 For Individuals

Capital Gains Tax: From April 2025, rates will rise from 10% to 18% (lower rate) and from 20% to 24% (higher rate), excluding residential property gains.

Stamp Duty for second homes will increase from 3% to 5%, effective tomorrow.

Carer’s Allowance threshold will rise from £151 to £195 per week, allowing carers to earn just over £10,000 per year and still claim the allowance.

Income Tax & National Insurance thresholds will begin rising with inflation from April 2028, with no extension to the current freeze.
