Helen is a fantastic adviser with a real passion for helping women with their finances .

We are really pleased to welcome Helen Quayle to Mather & Murray Financial. Helen is an Independent Financial adviser, who lives in Yate.

Helen provides advice to all, but is passionate about advising clients who are under-represented, specifically women. Helen wants to empower women to take control of their finances, seek support and education and give themselves and those they care for more positive outcomes.

A bit about Helen, by Helen:

"Free time feels a bit scarce these days with three children (my 12 year old step son and two girls aged 3 and 1) but my goodness its good fun. As a family we love camping and going to the beach.

We all love the outdoors and hope to get a new dog later in the year.

When my husband and I do get baby sitters we like to go to the theatre or go and see some live music.

I am the planner of the house and I am often booking trips or holidays or planning ways to improve our home and eventually I will run them past my husband!

I love my job as a financial planner and I feel so grateful for the relationships I build. Since having my children, I have realised the need to make sure financial advice is accessible to everyone. In particular I think there is gap in advice for young families and women and I am increasingly aware of my responsibility to bridge this gap and give financial wellbeing."

FULLY BOOKED FOR THE SUMMER ☀️

I love financial coaching, and have been overwhelmed by the number of people who need help.

Some would massively hike up their prices and take advantage of the situation, or set up group coaching so they made more money - but I am just not like that. And most people like and need 121 support!!

So I am working with those I have and closing my list for a couple of months - until October 1st 2023.

If you still need help and are happy to wait please send me a message and I'll pop you on the waiting list, if you'd like there is tons of help on my website.

HOW I SAVED NEARLY £2,000 THIS WEEK BY SHOPPING AROUND!

I am so fed up with the increasing prices, I question sometimes whether it’s due to inflation or just opportunistic and greedy price increases.

The news is so depressing I stopped watching it ages ago!

So many of my Financial Coaching clients are finding it so tough, and my food bill seems to keep increasing no matter how hard it is to economise…

So I had a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon, so I hunkered down, got on the phone and negotiated away… Here are a few of my recent wins, I know there will be more to come in the future.

FIRST THE PET INSURANCE

My personal pet peeve - sorry for the pun..

We have two lovely dogs, very healthy, no claims but the provider has bumped the price up by £8 per dog at renewal. Not happy.
Got on the phone, phone around, changed provider, took about 30 minutes and saved £10

NOT THE UTILIY BILL!!

Stayed with the same provider, saved £40 per month and worked out they had £580 in credit just sitting there. So I had that back, as I’d rather it was sitting in my account rather than theirs!

CAR INSURANCE

Again, got a notification it was due to go up. Got on the phone, negotiated a bit and although we have not saved any money, the price is staying the same. So a cost neutral win and it only took 10 minutes!

CAR MAINTENANCE

I don’t claim to know much about cars and there was a problem with the lights and I knew it would fail the MOT. It’s a Vauxhall, worth about £5,000 so I took it to the Vauxhall garage and they told me it would cost £2200!! When I picked myself off the floor I made another plan…

I got online ordered new lights, got some welding done - that cost me £50

Got the lights done by a local garage and it passed the MOT and cost me £400!
Yes it took some time to sort out, but it’s my car - my runaround and it needed doing. But instead of having to sleeve out over £2k it was less than £500 by being determined and shopping around….

ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO GET RID OF YOUR SKY?

It took Chris my husband about an hour to do it, but once we realised that we have
Disney, Netflix, Apple and Prime made sense and the decision was so much easier…
We get Disney free with a bank account. Apple costs £10 and Netdlick £8 but Sky was the most significant cost!

I made £200 by opening a NatWest Bank Account

I made (or will make) £200 just by opening a bank account with NatWest. Opening the bank account took me three and a half minutes.

There are some T&Cs - you have to deposit £1250 and I transferred two small direct debits

Here’s the link if you want to try it out and make £200!

https://www.natwest.com/current-accounts/switch-your-banking-to-natwest.html

Where else can you earn £200 this easily??

You are welcome ❤

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?

You have to be committed to saving money, it’s not for the faint hearted and It does take some time, you need to have a plan, have tenacity and be patient.

Plus don’t be afraid to play the system - what I mean is, if there is a free trial period, or reduced time period then put the date in your diary RIGHT NOW and cancel it 24 hours before you need to.

The upshot?

By my very rough calculations, just by shopping around I have saved £1932 over 12 months just by spending some time and shopping around.

I guess if you’re reading this and you’re curious and would love to save some money, but maybe you can’t be bothered or it seems just too hard, then the burning questions should be how much do you really want to save and then, how much is your time worth?

Have You Tried It?

With food bills on the increase, and the age old daily debate of what to have for dinner have you tried one of the food delivery systems.

One of my clients tried Hello Fresh and she loves it!

They always have new client offers and she had the first week at 60% off and then 4 other boxes at 40% off! (and if you've had it before just use a different email)

They decided to try it for August and have saved a fortune on their food shop this month obviously, and added bonus it's stopped that never ending debate of what to eat each night.

You can try this link or go onto the website and take a look for yourself :)

It's worth trying new stuff just to switch it up and find different and creative ways of saving ££££.

If you change nothing - nothing changes!! 💙

CURTAINS!!

So, I bought some curtains for a room we were updating. Saw some gorgeous ones when I scrolling through FB marketplace.

You know, nothing on TV, scrolling through FB and there they were.... Brand new - never used cost £750 new.

Bought them for £100 !

Tragically they were just too big so they've sat in a cupboard for 18 months.

Having a clear out and thought it was worth a go....

Advertised them for £500. Was offered £450. Jumped at the offer!

£350 profit!

£350 earned, probably 20 minutes of my time. AND I have cleared out a cupboard!

What have you got hiding in your cupboards??

WANT MY TRIED AND TESTED TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY?

Here’s my tried and tested top 5 tips for saving 2022:

Get an ISA - If you’re a taxpayer, then you need an ISA! Interest rates in instant access are dire at the moment so anything that helps especially an ISA that’s tax efficient isn’t going to harm.

Everyone who pays tax should have an ISA - it’s just good practice and savings sense.

Do a savings challenge - they can be fun and rewarding. Try a few and see which one works best for you.

Automate a roll up with your spending - there are many bank accounts that will do this automatically for you, every day, every week, every month or for every transaction. Your daily coffee that costs you £2.60, if you roll up the daily 40p - that’s £146.00 in a year!

Eat the freezer for a week, or Monday to Friday once a month. Not only will you make sure you clear out your freezer, you’ll be surprised how much you can save - it’s just good practice.

Turn down your thermostat! With energy prices continuing to rise, we are all in for a shock in how much our bills will be. So turn the thermostats down in all the rooms.

Finally remember the process of saving isn’t exciting and it’s not sexy, so find a way of anchoring the act of savings to something you enjoy. Rewarding and celebrating the little achievements and savings goals.

It’s a process and you have to trust in the process, be patient and give it enough time. It’s always about building good financial habits that can last a lifetime.

Why not make 2022 the year of making positive changes to help you save money.

If you want to sort out your finances, master your money and make sure you're in good shape (financially) call me and let's chat.

I bang on all the time about financial education for children, mainly because I hear so many parents talking, wishing the'd learned how to mange their money when they were younger.

I feel as a parent we have a responsibility to make sure our children learn from our mistakes.

So don’t let your legacy to your children be your limiting beliefs about money.

Did you know that the U.K. economy would be £200 billion better off, if children received financial education from a young age…

That is game changing, especially considering the state of the U.K. economy right now.

This is one of many reasons why I am so passionate about creating real financial awareness for children.
