TAX RETURN SEASON

If we had a pound for every time we have been told from a client that, “It’s all straightforward this year,” We would have been retired years ago!

Every accountant knows this familiar dance:-

→ April: “Plenty of time before the deadline.”
→ July: “I’ll dig out my paperwork soon.”
→ October: “I’ll drop it all in next week.”
→ January: “HELP!”

If you think your tax return prep is a ten minute affair, here’s what’s really going on behind the scenes.

1. We have to decipher receipts that survived a year in your glovebox.
2. We get to solve the mystery of the ‘unknown’ bank payment.
3. We try to work out if ‘miscellaneous expenses’ is a code for ‘I forgot what this was’.
4. We untangle your transactions that look like they’ve been through the washing machine.
5. We triple check that “£5.72” isn’t actually “£572”.

Here’s how you can save your accountant’s sanity (and possibly your own):-

→ Give us your paperwork early. We love early birds.

→ Keep your receipts in one place. Not several. Not “somewhere safe”.

→ Tell us about any new side hustles. We promise not to judge. We’ll just ask if you’re making any money.

→ Don’t assume HMRC finds typos charming.

→ Ask questions if you’re unsure. We’re here for the silly ones too.

The ten minute tax return is a HUGE myth.

But the relief on both sides when it’s done properly? That’s very real.

If you want this year’s tax return to be the smoothest ever, let’s make it a team effort ☺️

If you are self-employed, you might have heard about Making Tax Digital (MTD) and wondered, “Does this apply to me and from when?”

So, let us explain in more simple terms than HMRC do in the letters they are currently sending to those of you who are registered to file self-assessments.

MTD is coming in stages - based on how much you earn.

Did you earn upwards of £50,000 from April 2024 to April 2025? Then MTD applies from April 2026.

If you meet the threshold of £30,000 from April 2025 to April 2026, then you will be required from April 2027.

If your income is under £30,000, there is no current start date yet from HMRC. We do advise to start getting prepared though.

So what does all this actually mean for you?

MTD means every quarter you will file your figures to HMRC, and keep your accounting records on MTD-ready software. So, for those of you using spreadsheets you will need to start looking at software.

If you still have questions about any of this or want some help getting ready, please feel free to get in touch and we can happily explain and provide you with support.

🚨 VAT SCAM ALERT 🚨
We have had a number of clients today asking if the email below is really from HMRC. It's not - the sender email address is the giveaway and should be from a “gov.uk”address. Don't click the link shown. You can report this phishing at [email protected]

It does look very plausible so please watch out!

📢 FAQ Saturday 📢

Today's FAQ Saturday is about buying a company car. We get asked a lot what is the best thing to do for your finances, so here is some helpful guidance:

Diesel or petrol cars
Buy personally, not through your company:
- high benefit in kind tax
- very little company tax relief
- expensive mistake through company

Electric cars
Buy through your company:
- 100% tax relief on new purchases
- only 2% benefit in kind (increasing to 3% in Apr 2025)
- could save £20,000 in corporation tax on an £80,000 car

Hybrid cars
This depends on emissions and electric range:
- lower emissions = lower tax
- the further it can go on a charge = lower tax
- check the numbers first and ask us for further advice

Vans or pick-ups
Buy through your company:
- 100% tax relief
- lower benefit in kind (£3,960 max)
- makes sense for most businesses
