Spring always feels like a reset.

Easter brings a pause, a chance to spend time with family and reflect on what really matters. For me, that’s been time with my children, which always puts everything back into perspective.

At the same time, the new tax year kicks off, a fresh set of numbers, new opportunities, and for many business owners, a chance to draw a line and start again.

I was reminded of that walking through the tulips at Hatton Country World on Friday, everything in bloom, a reminder that growth doesn’t happen overnight, but with the right conditions, it does happen.

And then a completely different kind of energy watching the preview of the new musical Pride on Saturday. A great example of what happens when people bring passion, creativity and confidence together.

Different moments, but all pointing to the same thing:
- growth
- fresh starts
- and making the most of what’s in front of you.

As we head into the new tax year, it’s a good time to ask: Are you set up for what comes next?
If not, now’s the moment to sort it.

Is HMRC quietly killing tax planning for small businesses?

HMRC’s new consultation talks about “simplifying tax for small companies.”
But let’s call it what it really looks like…
👉 Standardising behaviour
👉 Reducing flexibility
👉 Increasing control
Planned changes include:
Quarterly reporting for companies
Expansion of Making Tax Digital
Possible merging of company & personal tax returns
Less distinction between salary and dividends

Here’s the uncomfortable question:
At what point does “simplification” become “restriction”?
Because from where I’m sitting:
Planning opportunities are narrowing
Timing advantages are disappearing
And the gap between “compliant” and “efficient” is closing fast

This could fundamentally change the role of the small business owner.
Less freedom to manage your own tax position.
More reliance on systems.
More reliance on HMRC’s version of “correct.”

Worth a read if you run a business

I'm Genuinely interested in views on this:
Is this a good move that reduces complexity?
Or are we slowly losing one of the key advantages of running a limited company?

At Fruition, we’re already seeing the direction of travel — and helping clients stay ahead of it.
But I suspect this one will divide opinion…

Three weeks in South America reminded me how quickly things can change.

I’ve just returned from an incredible trip:- Rio Carnival
Búzios
Patagonia, crossing the Andes from Argentina into Chile
Wine tasting in the Chilean vineyards Santiago

While I was away, a new war broke out,
a reminder that the world can change very quickly

On a much smaller scale, business can feel the same.
Plans shift. Costs rise. Tax rules change. Markets move.

The businesses that cope best aren’t always the biggest, they’re the ones that plan ahead and stay adaptable.

That’s what we focus on at Fruition Accountancy, helping business owners think ahead, structure properly and prepare for what’s coming next.

Because whether you're travelling across a continent or running a business, the journey is always smoother when you've planned the route

The last week of January… aka an accountant’s endurance test

Every year it’s the same.
Long days. Longer nights.
And inboxes suddenly coming alive with “Sorry John, only just found this…”

Here’s the thing:-

You don’t have to wait until January to do your tax return.
If information came in earlier:
Returns could be done in June or July
You’d know your tax bill early
You could plan the payment instead of panicking
You might even reduce your July payment on account

And yes… your accountant might actually sleep!

January doesn’t have to be stressful for anyone, clients or accountants.
A bit of planning, a bit of kindness, and a lot less last-minute chaos.

So maybe this year: Dig the info out earlier, use your numbers to plan properly
and let January be… just January

If you want help getting ahead of the game this year, you know where we are.
Thinking beyond the numbers.

🎄 A Christmas note from Fruition 🎄
As 2025 wraps up, it’s been a tough year for a lot of people — clients, team members, and me personally.
We’ve worked with businesses under real pressure, making big decisions while juggling everything else life throws at you. What’s really stood out though is the resilience — people just getting on with it, supporting each other, and doing the best they can.
I couldn’t be prouder of the Fruition team for the care, commitment and humanity they bring every day. And to our clients — thank you for trusting us, especially when things weren’t straightforward.
As Christmas approaches, I hope everyone gets a chance to slow down, step away from the noise for a bit, and enjoy some proper downtime.
Thanks for being part of our journey this year — here’s to a well-earned break and coming back refreshed in 2026.

From Budget Headlines to Train Timetables – A Week of Surprises

It’s been one of those weeks.
On Monday I was reading up on the Budget, thinking about how the changes will land for clients, especially small businesses and anyone juggling rising costs.

By Tuesday… I’d written off my car in an accident.
Thankfully no one was hurt, but it does shake you up. One minute you’re thinking about tax bands, the next you’re standing at the side of the road staring at a very bent Cupra.

So this week I’ve been getting used to public transport again. And it’s actually reminded me of something important:

Budgets! Whether personal or business can change overnight.
You can plan all you like, but sometimes life throws you a curveball, and suddenly you’re recalculating everything from your mileage to your priorities.

The Budget did exactly the same for a lot of businesses:
• Some good news with the continued push on investment and innovation
• More pressure for employers with rising wage costs
• And the ongoing need to rethink structures, reliefs and efficiencies

My takeaway this week?

Be prepared, be adaptable, and have a plan B – whether it’s a tax strategy or a train pass.

If you want to talk through how the Budget affects you or your business, or you just want to compare notes on the joys of public transport… happy to help.

Celebrating Children’s Book Week – Stories Beyond the Numbers

This week is Children’s Book Week, and we’re delighted to shine a spotlight on one of our own — Jessica Radford, part of the Fruition Accountancy team (known to our clients as Philippa Cooke ACA MAAT LIDTA) and the creative mind behind the inspiring children’s series The Animal Advisors.

Jessica’s books — including The Squirrel Who Couldn’t Balance and The Penguin Who Only Tried Once — use imaginative animal adventures to help children explore confidence, resilience and self-belief. 🐧🐿️

The Power of Purpose in Business

This week our team volunteered with Grace Cares CIC 💚 not-for-profit on a mission to MAKE CARE SUSTAINABLE ♻️ helping prepare donated hospital mattresses for care homes. Not your typical accountancy task — but it delivered something vital: energy, purpose, and perspective.

When businesses embrace CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), it doesn’t just support the community — it motivates teams, strengthens culture, and boosts recruitment and retention. And it doesn’t have to cost much. Often, time is the most valuable gift.

At Fruition Accountancy, we help clients weave CSR into both their financial and cultural strategy, creating workplaces people are proud to be part of.

Great to be part of this initiative:-)

Riding out storms and saying goodbye to traditions

This weekend I was in Porthcawl with Charlie – and while the coastal winds certainly gave us a battering, what struck me more was the emotional storm brewing in the town itself.

The famous Coney Beach funfair – a landmark that has brought joy for over 100 years – has now closed its gates for the final time. For generations, families made memories here: candyfloss, rollercoasters, and those shared moments of pure fun.

You could feel the sense of sadness as the locals walked past taking photos through the locked gates, knowing that a piece of history was coming to an end.

Storms, whether they be the weather or in business, remind us that nothing stands still forever. Change is inevitable – traditions shift, businesses evolve, and communities adapt. Just as the funfair must make way for something new, we too have to think about what’s next, and how we preserve the spirit of what’s been lost while building something that lasts for the future.

For me, it’s another reminder of why I do what I do – helping businesses weather their own storms, adapt to change, and make sure they’re strong enough to stand the test of time.

Here’s to holding onto the memories, but also to creating the next generation of stories – both in business and in life!

🎉 Milestones Matter 🎉

This week feels extra special. Our business celebrates its 5th birthday today – a journey that’s been full of growth, challenges, and amazing support from clients, colleagues, and friends along the way.

But milestones don’t just happen in business. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be marking some very personal ones too:

My mum turning 90

My pa reaching 30

My daughter celebrating 20

A good friend hitting the big 40

And my own 60th

Each milestone is different, but they all share one thing – they’re reminders of the progress we make, the people who walk with us, and the memories we create together.

Whether in business or in life, milestones give us a chance to pause, reflect, and celebrate. They remind us to look back with gratitude and forward with excitement.

Here’s to the next chapter – for all of us.
