A great afternoon at Ravenscliffe Event Space, Porthill, for a cyber security event hosted by Hobb Computer Services Ltd and Object First ☕🔐

With ransomware attacks capable of bringing businesses to a halt for weeks in a worst-case scenario, it was a timely and eye-opening discussion on resilience, immutable backups, and planning for recovery – not just prevention.

Add in a lovely tapas-style lunch and a raffle win (congrats to Steve, our Office Manager, on the LEGO Technic Ferrari 🏎️👏), and it made for a brilliant event all round.

Thanks to everyone involved for the insights and hospitality.

HMRC recently argued that carpet fitters working alongside carpet retailers were actually employees of those retailers.

But the Tribunal disagreed.

Why?

Because the fitters were clearly operating as independent businesses — using their own tools, holding their own insurance, invoicing customers directly and taking responsibility for their own work.

The decision reinforces an important principle:

➡️ Even if a retailer introduces the fitter to the customer, that does not make the fitter an employee if the reality shows genuine self-employment.
