Handing your books over can feel a bit like giving someone the keys to your house. You want to know exactly what they’re going to do in there.

So here’s the honest, start-to-finish version. From the first chat, to the boring-but-important onboarding bits, to what actually lands in your inbox each month.

Swipe through and you’ll see there’s nothing to be nervous about (and a lot less for you to do than you think).

If you’d rather hand it over and get on with the actual work, DM me the word BOOKS today and we’ll get a chat in the diary.

Not quite ready to talk but want a rough idea of cost? Try the quote generator on my website - it takes a couple of minutes and there’s zero obligation. Link in bio 🔗

I say this to clients all the time, so you may as well hear it too 🫶

You’ve done the work. You’ve sent the invoice. And now… you’ve got no idea when the money’s actually going to land. Sound familiar?

You’re really not alone in that.

One study found 71% of small business owners have lain awake worrying about cash flow. It’s one of the most stressful bits of running your own thing, and it’s so often down to one simple issue: not knowing when you’ll be paid.

So here’s the fix I keep recommending. If you invoice the same clients regularly, set up a direct debit, something like GoCardless or Adfin collects the payment automatically. You can actually plan your cash flow, you stop wasting evenings sending “just chasing this 🙂” messages, and it’s one less thing on your client’s to-do list too.

Not every business suits direct debit, and that’s fine. If that’s you, put a payment link straight on your invoice. If you’re invoicing through software such as Xero, FreeAgent and QuickBooks, you can set this up in seconds, and people tend to just tap and pay there and then rather than leaving it for “later” (we all know how later goes).

Small change. Paid faster, chase less. Save this one for when you’ve got five minutes to sort it 🫶

HMRC’s changed its tune on MTD. And if you’ve been hoping it’d quietly go away? Bad news.

Up until now, signing yourself up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax was your job.

From September, HMRC starts doing it for the people who should already be signed up for 2026/27 but haven’t got round to it.

Being signed up isn’t the same as being ready though.

There’s a soft landing on late quarterly updates this first year.

The final declaration’s a different beast: penalties apply as normal, and you can no longer file it directly through HMRC like you used to. It has to go through MTD-compatible software.

If you’re in the £50k cohort and still not set up, you’re not alone.

That’s exactly what my MTD Power Hour is for. For £97 we’ll go through what you actually need to do and when, talk through your software options, and come up with a plan that fits you, whether that’s handling it all yourself or bringing in a bit of support. You’ll come away knowing exactly where you stand and what to do next.

Power Hour link’s in the comments, or drop me a DM and we’ll get you booked in.

Something honest about how I work 🫶

I built this business around my kids. Being there for them was the whole reason I did it. My youngest are nearly-2-year-old twins who aren’t in nursery yet, so right now my days revolve around them. It won’t be forever (they’ll be off to nursery before I know it, and I’ll probably be a mess about it), but for now, this is how things look.

So I don’t take calls when I’m flying solo with the babies, mostly because you deserve my full attention, not half of me with a toddler meltdown in the background. Drop me a WhatsApp instead and I’ll come back to you quicker than you’d expect.

And here’s the upside for you: because I work flexibly, I can be flexible around you too. If middle-of-the-day meetings or calls aren’t realistic because you’re back to back with your own clients - evenings are no problem. And if you do need a daytime call? Also no problem, I’ll make arrangements. I know business never fits in a neat 9-5.

Fancy a chat about your books? Book a call with me — link in bio. No pressure, no sales pitch, just a friendly conversation about where you’re at. 🙂

Be honest with me 👇

What’s the one thing in your business you keep meaning to sort… and it just keeps sliding to the bottom of the list?

The tax return you’re not thinking about.
The pile of receipts and screenshots.
The niggling worry that you’re not even doing it right.
Whatever it is — you are so not the only one.

Tell me yours below, or send it quietly if you’d rather. No judgement here, ever. And who knows, I might even be able to point you towards something that makes your life a bit easier. 🫶

So, Making Tax Digital Q1 - done and dusted. 🎉

Well… for some. There’s still a huge number of people who haven’t even registered who should be complying this time round (about half 🤯), never mind submitted their quarterly update!

Years of webinars, changing the goalposts, educating clients. And was it smooth sailing? Honestly, a bit of a mixed bag.

One client moved off spreadsheets and onto software and had their return submitted in about a week. Others left it right to the last minute, and it’s hard to light a fire under anyone when there are no penalties yet 🤷‍♀️

So what have we learned?

👉 It pays to be organised.

👉 There’s no one-size-fits-all software.

👉 Some software companies have been brilliant at ironing out issues. Others… less so.

👉 And if you’ve got an accountant, please please ask them before you commit to a software. Some softwares spin a great yarn, but: can they actually do the final submission? Do they allow accountant access? What’s their support like? Does it even have the features you need?

If you’re in the £30k cohort, starting April 2027, or reckon you might be, I’m running MTD Power Hour sessions (£97).

Feels ages away, I know. But there are a lot more people who need to comply next round, and plenty of accountants felt the squeeze this time (MTD and the most common VAT deadline landing on the same day was a real treat 🙃) so it may not be so easy to get support. Get sorted now, while it’s quiet. Far nicer than scrambling next year.

Drop me a DM with “POWER HOUR” and we’ll get you booked in.

Two days to go. Ready or not 😬

If you were mandated into MTD this year - income over £50k on your 2024/25 return - Friday the 7th is your first quarterly update deadline.

And it doesn’t matter whether you’re on the standard periods (6 April to 5 July) or you’ve opted for calendar quarters (1 April to 30 June) - the deadline’s the same either way: 7 August.

It’s just a summary of your income and expenses sent through your software. It’s not a full tax return, and there’s nothing to pay with it.

It’s a soft-landing year too, so no penalty points for a late update this time round. Not a reason to ignore it, but it takes the edge off if this first quarter’s been a bit of a scramble.

So, how’s it actually gone? Smooth as anything, or have you spent the week swearing at your software (and probably HMRC too 🫠)? Drop me a comment before Friday and tell me how you’re finding it.

New month, fresh faces, so here’s a reintroduction for anyone who’s just landed here.

Hi, I’m Suzanne 👋 mum of four, qualified and licensed accountant, and someone who’s made it her mission to take the fear out of the finance bit.

I support solo-run businesses with bookkeeping, tax and actually understanding your numbers. Most of my clients have never worked with an accountant before, and the thing I hear most often is that it was far simpler than they’d built it up to be in their heads. No big words. No complicated explanations. And every question welcome - yes, even the ones you think are silly (they’re not).

As a business owner and a mum, I know your plate is full. So I meet you where you are, with support that flexes to fit: getting you set up with a system that works, being on hand for the quick questions and the scary bits (hello, tax returns and HMRC), or taking the whole lot off your hands completely.

I also know how awkward it feels to ask for help with no clue what it’ll cost. So there’s a quote calculator on my website. Pop in a few details, get a price. No name, no email, no sneaky mailing list sign-up. Just a number to help you decide if I’m your person.

Have a nosy today - the quote calculator’s linked in my bio, along with everywhere else you can find me. If you’ve been putting off sorting your books, consider this your sign to make life easier on yourself.
