People often ask which bookkeeping software I recommend.

The honest answer is that it depends on the business.

These are the software providers I partner with and use regularly with my clients:

🩵 Xero
🩵 FreeAgent
🩵 Apron

My clients are fairly evenly split between Xero and FreeAgent, and both have their strengths depending on the business and how you like to work.

Apron is another tool I use regularly. It helps with invoice capture and data extraction, supplier payments, payroll payments, and even taking payments from your own customers.

The right software isn’t always the one with the longest list of features. It’s the one that fits the way you work and makes running your business easier.

What software are you using at the moment?

My winner’s badge has arrived 🥳

For anyone who hasn’t heard of it before, Small Business Sunday ( ) is a small business community founded by Theo Paphitis. Every week, a handful of UK small businesses are chosen to join, gaining access to networking opportunities, events, business support and a community of fellow business owners.

I’m incredibly proud to have been selected.

Running a small business can sometimes feel like you’re figuring things out as you go, so it’s lovely to receive recognition from such a well-respected small business initiative.

I’m looking forward to connecting with other SBS winners and seeing where this opportunity leads. 💚

Well this is a bit exciting…

I’ve been chosen as a Small Business Sunday winner by !

A little over a year ago I took the leap and started building a business around something that mattered to me - helping small business owners who are brilliant at what they do but feel completely overwhelmed by the money side of things.

As a mum of four, I wanted to create a business that worked around my family, but also one that felt different. No suits, no scary meetings, no making people feel silly for asking questions.

To have that recognised by Theo Paphitis and the SBS community honestly means so much.

A huge thank you to everyone who has trusted me with their business, recommended me, liked a post, shared my content or simply cheered me on. Every little bit has helped me get here.

Here’s to helping even more small business owners feel a little less alone with their finances. 💚

Less than 2 months to go until the first Making Tax Digital deadline.

So, a quick check...

✔️ Have you registered?
(Remember, if you need to join MTD, HMRC won’t move you over automatically.)

✔️ Have you chosen compatible software?

✔️ Is your bookkeeping up to date?

The good news is that the quarterly update itself is much simpler than a lot of people think.

You’re not completing a full tax return every three months. You don’t need to worry about tax reliefs, bank interest, dividends or other sources of income at this stage.

The quarterly update is simply a report of your business and/or rental income and expenses for that period.

If you’ve been putting it off because it all feels a bit overwhelming, you’re definitely not the only one. But with 60 days to go, now’s a good time to get everything in place.

If you’d like some help getting MTD-ready, send me a DM with MTD.

Last week it was my FreeAgent accreditation, this week it’s Xero Certified Specialist Level 3.

I use Xero with many of my clients, so keeping my knowledge up to date is very important. Software changes all the time, and I want to make sure I’m making the best use of it for the businesses I support.

And if you’re thinking about moving over to Xero but aren’t sure where to start, I can help with that too through my Xero: Set Up & Sorted package - getting everything set up properly and showing you how to use it with confidence. 💙

💜 Small Business Week 💜

Did you know that around 75% of UK private sector businesses are run without any staff apart from the owner(s)?

That’s around 4.3 million businesses.

4.3 million people (and sometimes couples or families) doing the marketing, the admin, the customer service, the bookkeeping, the social media, and somehow remembering to have a life outside of work.

It’s quite mind-blowing when you stop and think about it, isn’t it?

As a small business owner myself, I know how easy it is to look at someone else’s business and assume there’s a whole team behind it.

Most of the time, there isn’t.

So this Small Business Week, if you know a small business owner, leave them a review, recommend them to a friend, share a post, or simply tell them they’re doing a good job.

Those little acts of support make more of a difference than you might realise. ❤️

I’d love to know - if you run a business, what’s the one job you wish you could hand over to someone else?

It’s Small Business Week, and one of the things I’ve been reflecting on is just how different every business owner is.

Some people start a business because they want more flexibility around their family.

Some want to build a team and take over the world.

Some dream of opening a little shop.

Some are happiest working by themselves.

Some want to maximise every penny of profit.

Others are happy earning enough to pay the bills and having the freedom to do the school run.

And honestly? I think that’s what makes small business so brilliant.

People often ask me whether being an accountant gets boring.

The truth is, I can’t think of many jobs where you get such a fascinating insight into so many different lives and businesses.

Over the years I’ve worked with all sorts of businesses, and no two are ever the same.

The way you’d approach bookkeeping for an e-commerce business is completely different to how you’d approach it for a consultant.

A hairdresser works differently to a construction company.

A creative business has different priorities to a dentist.

Even two businesses in exactly the same industry can have completely different goals.

One of the biggest things my career has taught me is that there isn’t one right way to run a business.

And because of that, I don’t think there’s one right way to support one either.

For me, the best part of the job isn’t the tax returns or the spreadsheets.

It’s getting to know the people behind the businesses. Their quirks, their way of working, what they’re trying to build, and what success actually looks like to them.

Because at the end of the day, the bookkeeping is only one small part of a much bigger story.

So for Small Business Week, here’s to all the businesses quietly doing things their own way. Whether you’re building an empire or simply building a life that works for you. ❤️

Another year, another FreeAgent accreditation update completed ✅💙

I’m really pleased to have renewed my FreeAgent accreditation for another year.

It’s one of my favourite bookkeeping platforms to work with because it’s so straightforward and user-friendly. A lot of small business owners don’t want complicated software with a load of features they don’t even need - they just want something that helps them stay organised without taking hours out of their day, and FreeAgent does exactly that.

It’s also free with certain business bank accounts, which makes it an even more attractive option for many sole traders and small businesses.

Keeping my accreditation up to date means I can continue helping clients get the most out of the software and support them as Making Tax Digital continues to roll out.

If you’re not sure whether FreeAgent could work for your business, feel free to get in touch - I’m always happy to chat through the options.

I didn’t start Small Business Bookkeeping just because I wanted to run an accountancy practice.

I started it because I wanted more flexibility for my family.

As a mum of four, including twin toddlers, I wanted to build something that allowed me to be present for the moments that matter while still doing work I genuinely enjoy.

At the same time, I knew exactly who I wanted to help.

Having worked in accountancy practices for years, I’d seen first-hand how many small business owners struggled to get the support they needed. The sole traders. The people wearing every hat in their business. The people trying to fit bookkeeping and tax around actually doing the work that earns them money.

So I built the kind of business I wanted to work for and the kind of support I believed those business owners deserved.

Since then, I’ve helped business owners stay on top of their bookkeeping, understand their tax obligations, and feel more confident about their finances. Not through complicated reports or corporate boardrooms, but through practical support, WhatsApp messages, voice notes and conversations with a real person.

What I’m most proud of isn’t the business itself.

It’s the trust people place in me when they hand over something that often feels overwhelming.

Running a small business can be challenging. Some months are brilliant. Some months are stressful. Most months are a bit of both.

That’s why Small Business Week matters.

Behind every small business is a person taking a chance on themselves, trying to build something better for their family, their customers, or their community.

If you’d like to support a small business this week, it doesn’t always have to mean spending money. Leave a review. Recommend them to a friend. Share their post. Tell people about the great service you received.

Those small actions make a bigger difference than you might realise.

And if you’ve supported my business in any way over the last year - thank you ❤️
