Anyone else feel like September is the real New Year?

For lots of business owners with kids, the summer holidays are a juggling act.

Running the business.
Keeping the kids entertained.
Trying to take some time off yourself.

And inevitably, a few things get pushed down the list.

So with the kids heading back to school, September can be a good time for a bit of a business reset too.

Catch up on the bookkeeping.
Check what’s outstanding.
Have a look at your numbers.
Think about what’s coming up over the next few months.

And if your accounts have been sitting on the bottom of the summer to-do list… you’re definitely not the only one. 😅

£20k in sales this month.
But what did you actually keep?

Revenue gets all the attention. But there are actually three numbers every business owner should know:

Revenue = what you sell
Profit = what’s left after your business costs
Cash = what’s actually sitting in the bank (Cash is king!)

And they’re definitely not the same thing.

You can have your best sales month ever and still wonder where all the money has gone.

So next time you’re checking how the business is doing, don’t stop at turnover.

Look at the profit.
Then look at the bank.

Those two numbers usually tell you a lot more!!

Not every conversation with your accountant needs to be about your year-end accounts.

Some of the questions we get asked most often are:

Can I afford to take someone on?

Should I buy the van?

Why have I made a profit but there’s no money in the bank?

Can I afford to take more money out of the business?

Do I need to register for VAT?

How much should I be putting aside for tax?

These are the conversations we actually like having with our clients.

Because sometimes you don’t need a set of accounts.

You just need to be able to pick up the phone, ask the question and understand your numbers before you make the decision.

One of the things we love about where we’re based is having such a lovely space to welcome clients into the building.

Then it’s upstairs to our own office and meeting room, where we can sit down, have a coffee and actually talk about your business.

No stuffy boardrooms. No making things more complicated than they need to be.

Your accountant should be someone you can actually talk to.

For me, good accountancy has never just been about preparing the numbers.

It’s about knowing the people and businesses behind them, being there when clients have questions and helping them understand what their numbers actually mean.

Sometimes you need tax advice. Sometimes you need help making a business decision. And sometimes you just need to be able to pick up the phone and ask, “Can I run something past you?”

A very proud day for us 💚

Some of you will know our daughter Chloe, who helps us behind the scenes at Stockport Accountancy Services with admin and credit control.

She’s absolutely smashed her A Levels getting 3 A’s and is now off to Liverpool Uni to study Law with German 🎓

We’re all incredibly proud of her. Well done Chloe! ❤️

And a huge well done to everyone getting their results today. Whatever your next step is, you should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved!

A little bit of life outside SAS ❤️

A couple of weeks ago Steve and I took some time out for a family break in Austria 🇦🇹

Running a business can make it very difficult to properly switch off, but we are definitely getting better at it. Thanks to having a wonderful team looking after the business for us.

We had the best time, Austria was absolutely beautiful and it was lovely to spend some quality time together.

Back to reality now though! 💻😂
