The end is in sight.

The team are just 185 miles from the finishing line in Greece. From a swimming pool in Stafford, we've crossed the Channel, made our way through France, Germany and Austria, climbed through the Alps and worked our way down the length of Italy.

Every one of those miles has been for A Child of Mine and the Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance. Both charities stand beside families on the hardest days they'll ever face. Our goal is to raise £25,000 for them in our 25th year.

Do you know which VAT scheme your business is on?

The difference between the schemes is mostly about timing, and timing is cash flow.

Standard, or accrual - VAT is recorded on the date of the invoice. If a customer takes ninety days to pay, you can hand that VAT to HMRC before they have paid you anything at all.

Cash - VAT is recorded when the money actually moves, both on what comes in and what goes out. If you deal with slow payers, this is often the right home.

Flat rate - A simplified option. You pay one percentage of your gross income and generally do not reclaim VAT on your expenses, with some allowances for assets.

There is no universally correct answer. There is a right answer for your business, and it usually comes down to how quickly you get paid.

If you are not confident you are on the right one, that is a short conversation worth having.

To register or not to register - that is the VAT question!

VAT is charged on most goods and services sold in the UK. Once your business is registered, you add it to what you charge your customers, and you hand that money to HMRC. The VAT you collect is not income. It lands in your bank account, it looks like your money, but it never was.

You do not have to wait until you are forced to register

There is a turnover threshold at which registering becomes compulsory. But you can register voluntarily at any point, even on your first day of trading. Whether that is a good idea depends almost entirely on who your customers are.

Should you register for VAT before you have to?

It's easy to assume you wait until you are forced by HMRC before registering, but you don't have to. Voluntary registration is available from your first day of trading.

Whether it is a good idea depends almost entirely on who you sell to.

If your customers are mainly other businesses, registering early often works in your favour. They are likely to be registered themselves, so the VAT you charge them costs them nothing in real terms. Meanwhile you start reclaiming the VAT on your own costs straight away.

If your customers are mainly the general public, it works the other way round. They cannot reclaim a penny. Register early and you have either made yourself noticeably more expensive overnight, or you are absorbing the difference out of your margin.

Same rules, opposite answers. Which is why this is a positioning decision as much as a tax one, and worth thinking about properly rather than waiting for the threshold to make it for you.

Our Charity Quiz Night is back!

April's quiz night was such a brilliant evening that we're doing it again, this time with a festive twist.

Join us on Thursday 19th November at The Post House Bar & Grill in Stafford. We'll start at 7pm and finish around 9:30pm.

Entry is £56 per team of 4 (plus booking fee). That includes a burger and fries for everyone, served during the break at 8pm. Let us know about any dietary requirements when you book.

You don't need to be a quiz whiz! Just bring your team and be ready to have a great night.

All profits go to A Child of Mine and the Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance. Every team that signs up helps us towards our £25,000 target for our 25th year.
