Monday Mileage. 808 miles in.
The Accountants Pilgrimage has made it through the Black Forest.

808 miles from Stafford, and we have crossed into Germany, navigated the forest, and we are now heading south toward Switzerland. The Alps are close. We can almost see them from here.

Almost.

At 808 miles we are now well on our way to Athens, and every one of those miles has been covered by the Carthy Accountants team and friends through running, cycling, walking, swimming, and rowing.

All in aid of our One Big Mission: to raise £25,000 in 2026 for A Child of Mine and the Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance, two extraordinary charities that get alongside families going through the hardest times imaginable.

If you would like to help us through the Alps and on toward Athens, a donation to our JustGiving page goes directly to both charities. Every pound counts and every pound is appreciated.

Next stop: Switzerland.

Did you know that some large companies run a weekly reconciliation of their finances? Every seven days they know exactly where they stand.

That level of financial visibility used to require an entire internal finance team. It was simply not available to smaller businesses.

That has changed. And it often starts with something as simple as a pre-year end meeting.

Once a business owner experiences the value of knowing their financial position with enough time to act on it, they almost always want it more often. Halfway through the year. Every quarter. Eventually monthly. The pre-year end meeting is often the first step on that journey.

In this clip Michael explains the progression, and why any business can now have the kind of real-time financial insight that used to be reserved for big companies with a dedicated finance department.

Have you ever sat and thought: if only I had known that three months ago?

It is one of the most common things we hear from business owners. Reviewing their year end figures months after the fact and realising the opportunities to act on them have already closed.

I would have put more into my pension. I would have bought that piece of equipment before the year ended. I would have set money aside for that tax bill.

A pre-year end meeting turns that conversation around completely. Instead of looking back six months after the fact, you are sitting down with your accountant before the year closes, with a clear picture of where things stand and still enough time to do something about it.

Are you on track for the targets you set at the start of the year? Is there still scope to reduce your tax bill? Do you know what is coming so you can plan for it without the shock?

These are the conversations that should be happening before your year end, not after it.

Cast your mind back to a bag of receipts dropped off at the accountant six months after the year end.

Or a floppy disk. Or a USB drive with a software backup. And by the time anyone looked at it, the information was so old it was almost useless for anything other than filing.

Cloud accounting changed that completely. Now we have real-time information. Which means instead of telling clients what happened, we can work with them on what is happening right now and what is coming next.

In this short clip Michael explains why cloud software is one of the best tools ever created for accountants, and why the software companies telling you that you do not need an accountant are missing the point entirely.

Did you know there are tax planning opportunities available to your business right now that close the moment your financial year ends?

Things like pension contributions, asset purchases that qualify for capital allowances, and a range of limited company costs that many business owners are not even aware they can put through the business.

None of this is complicated. But all of it needs to happen before the deadline. And most business owners find out about it after the year has already closed.

That is exactly the problem a pre-year end meeting is designed to solve. It is a conversation with your accountant one to two months before your year end, while the figures are clear and there is still time to act.

No unexpected tax bills. No missed opportunities. No sitting in a year end meeting saying 'in hindsight, I would have done that differently.'

We have written about what this actually looks like in practice on our blog. Worth a read if any of this sounds familiar.

When Adam is asked why so many business owners do not use an accountant, his honest answer is 'fear'. And having worked with hundreds of business owners over the years, it is one he has seen up close.

The jargon. The documents. HMRC. It all exists in a world that can feel like it is not quite yours, and approaching it can feel exposing.

If you have ever felt that way, or if you have been put off by a bad experience with an accountant in the past, this clip is worth sixty seconds of your time.

It might sound silly. But, fear can stop business owners from using an accountant.

Not dramatic fear. Just a quiet reluctance to engage with a world that has its own language, its own rules, and its own potential consequences. Tax, HMRC, professional documents. For a lot of people it is genuinely intimidating, and that is completely understandable.

Some of it comes from bad experiences. We see it regularly, clients coming to us for the first time having felt spoken down to by a previous accountant. Made to feel like they should already know things they were never told.

That is not how it should work. Your figures are your figures. You have every right to understand them, and if something is not clear the first time, it should be explained differently until it is.

Due to an ongoing situation related to an incident near the golf club, we have made the decision to postpone this year’s Carthy Cup.

The Carthy Cup 2026 will now take place on Friday 18th September at Castle Golf and Leisure in Stafford.

We’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and continued support. We look forward to welcoming all teams later in the year for another fantastic day of fundraising.

What does not having an accountant actually cost you?

Most business owners think of accountancy as a cost. Something to minimise if possible, or avoid altogether if you can manage without it.

But if you are spending time every month on bookkeeping and financial admin that you could be spending on billable work, that time has a real value. And when you do that maths, the calculation looks very different.

In this clip we reframe the concept.

Nobody likes to admit this, but a lot of business owners are quietly scared of their accountant.

Not scared in a dramatic sense. Just a low-level reluctance to engage with the whole subject. The jargon, the documents, the HMRC letters. It all exists in a world that can feel like it is not quite yours to navigate.

We hear this more than you might think. And we also hear what happens on the other side of it, when someone finally sits down with the right accountant and realises it does not have to feel that way at all.

In the latest edition of the Business Success Insights blog we have written about the four real reasons business owners go without proper accountancy support. The fear one is probably the most honest, and the one I think is worth reading whether you have an accountant or not.

The other three are cost, AI and software, and avoidance. All of them are understandable. None of them are quite what they seem on the surface.
