💗 Self-employed dads and partners could soon qualify for paternity pay!

For years, self-employed parents have missed out on the paternity pay available to many employed fathers and partners.

But that’s set to change!

The Government has announced plans to introduce paternity payments for eligible self-employed fathers and partners, helping more families take time away from work following the arrival of a baby.

What’s been announced?

• Up to two weeks of financial support
• Currently estimated at up to £194 per week
• More than 150,000 additional parents could benefit each year

When can you claim?

Not just yet!

Although the policy was announced on 26th October 2026, the Government has not yet confirmed the start date, eligibility requirements or application process.

For self-employed parents who often have to choose between taking time off and keeping their business running, this could be a welcome change.

At BP Accounting, we keep sole traders, self-employed individuals and small business owners informed about Government support, tax changes and opportunities that could benefit their families and businesses.

Because being self-employed shouldn’t mean missing out on important support.

🎄 Paying your staff early for Christmas? Don’t let it cause problems with HMRC!

Many businesses choose to pay their employees early in December so they have their wages before Christmas.

But did you know that the date you actually pay your staff isn’t always the date you should report to HMRC?

HMRC’s Christmas payroll easement means that if you’re paying employees early because of the festive period, you should still use their normal contractual payday on your Full Payment Submission (FPS).

For example:

💗 Staff receive their wages on 19th December 2026.

💗 Their normal contractual payday is 31st December 2026.

✅ You report 31st December 2026 as the payment date on your FPS.

Why does this matter?

Reporting the earlier date could affect employees receiving Universal Credit or other income-based benefits, potentially causing unnecessary complications.

A small payroll detail, but one that can make a big difference!

At BP Accounting, we help businesses manage their payroll, stay compliant with HMRC and keep on top of important employment and tax deadlines.

Because Christmas payroll should be straightforward, even when everything else in December is anything but! 🎄

🚨 Own more than 25% of your company? HMRC may be checking your personal tax return!

HMRC is contacting some company owners who are registered at Companies House as People with Significant Control (PSCs).

The aim is to check whether their personal Self Assessment returns correctly reflect certain transactions involving their companies.

What could HMRC be looking at? 👀

💗 Personal expenses paid through the company
💗 Company cars and other assets used personally
💗 Director’s loan accounts and shareholder loans
💗 Share disposals and asset transfers

If you’ve received one of these letters, don’t panic. It isn’t a formal tax investigation, but it is worth making sure everything has been reported correctly.

HMRC is asking recipients to review their previous returns and correct any errors by 31st January 2027.

If everything has been declared correctly, no response is required.

At BP Accounting, we help limited company directors understand their personal and company tax obligations, manage director’s loan accounts and ensure their Self Assessment returns are completed correctly.

Your company finances and personal tax position are closely connected. Getting both right matters.
