AI is clever… but it still can’t make you a cup of tea ☕
Artificial Intelligence has gone from sci-fi fantasy to office reality faster than you can say “spreadsheet error.”
One minute we were manually typing invoices and double-checking calculators, and the next, software is categorising transactions before we’ve even finished our morning tea.
AI isn’t brand new, of course. Versions of it have been quietly working behind the scenes since the 1980s, helping banks, insurers and large organisations automate decisions and processes. But it wasn’t until the rise of cloud computing in the 2010s that AI really hit its stride. Suddenly, powerful tools became accessible to everyday businesses , not just massive corporations with server rooms and suspiciously serious IT teams.
Today, AI can help with everything from analysing financial data to answering questions instantly. Which raises an important question: what does all this mean for service businesses like Accounting?
The undeniable benefits (and yes, we like them too)
Let’s be honest , AI can be brilliant.
It can process data faster than any human, spot unusual transactions, categorise expenses, and help produce reports in a fraction of the time it used to take. Tasks that once took hours can now take minutes, freeing up time for more meaningful work.
For our clients, this means faster turnaround times, more up-to-date information, and fewer late-night worries about whether that one mysterious expense will cause chaos later.
At J.L. Bookkeeping and Advice Services Ltd, we use modern tools that help us work efficiently, accurately and more importantly, without losing our sanity during busy periods. Automation helps reduce human error and keeps everything running smoothly.
But (and it’s a big but)… technology isn’t perfect.
The part computers can’t do: BEING HUMAN!
Bookkeeping isn’t just numbers. It’s people, businesses, goals, worries, plans, and occasionally panic when HMRC sends a letter.
AI can give answers, but it can’t truly understand your situation. It doesn’t know your long-term plans, your business ambitions, or why you’re suddenly worried about cash flow after landing a big opportunity. It can’t reassure you, explain things in plain English, or tell you “don’t worry, this is completely normal.”
And while a chatbot might answer your question at 2am, it won’t know you well enough to give advice tailored specifically to you.
It certainly won’t laugh with you about that one receipt you definitely meant to keep but absolutely cannot find.
Trust, reassurance, and understanding are things that come from real relationships, not algorithms.
How we use technology at JLBAS
At J.L. Bookkeeping and Advice Services Ltd, we see technology as a helpful assistant , not the boss.
We use excellent digital tools to streamline processes, improve accuracy, and keep your financial information organised and up to date. This means less time spent on repetitive tasks and more time spent doing what actually matters: helping you understand your numbers and make confident decisions.
Because numbers alone don’t tell the whole story.
We take the time to understand you, your business, and your goals. We’re here to answer questions, explain things clearly, and support you , whether that’s planning ahead, solving a problem, or simply reassuring you that you’re on the right track.
Think of us as your Accounting partner , with software support, but very much human at heart.
The best approach: humans + technology (not humans vs technology)
AI is here to stay, and when used properly, it makes bookkeeping more efficient, accurate, and accessible.
But the real magic happens when you combine modern technology with genuine human support.
At JLBAS, we’ll always use the best tools available to improve efficiency and accuracy. But we’ll never replace personal service with automation.
You’ll always be able to speak to a real person.
You’ll always be able to ask questions.
And you’ll always receive advice based on understanding you , not just your data.
Because while software can organise your numbers, it takes a human to truly support your business.
And thankfully, WE'RE VERY GOOD AT BEING HUMAN 💞
