Data provided by HMRC to AccountingWEB has revealed that around 69% of registrations (393,000 taxpayers) for the new Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax programme were completed by an agent or representative on behalf of a taxpayer, with around 31% (176,000) completed directly by taxpayers themselves.

Statistics published by HMRC shortly after the first quarterly submission deadline on 7 August stated that of the 864,000 taxpayers mandated into MTD for income tax from April 2026, more than 570,000 (66%) actually registered, with more than 436,000 (50.5%) successfully filing quarterly updates.

Well, that's the stats. The reality of this first quarter was harsh for us and other Accountants that we have heard from. No matter how prepared we and our clients were, HMRC systems and what was synced with the software companies was incomplete and issues arose. This has been time consuming and has set us back in our other non MTD work. Our clients were brilliant though as only one was late providing the information, and all but that one submission was made on time, despite the tech hitches.

As a result, we have been turning away any new work as we are aware we are likely to end up with a lot more extra work from existing clients than originally anticipated. Plus we need to factor in the extra time needed to sort out the tech issues that have come with the MTD software.

We hope Quarter 2 will be a smoother ride with less tech complexities, but there are no guarantees. As we said in our MTD ITSA special newsletter last year, this affects all our clients, whether you are registered for MTD, or not. We will get the work done, but patience is required for the time being.

First week almost done for the new Prime Minister. Here's a list of the changes made so far -

MTD ITSA Q1 deadline approaching

We have been going on about MTD ITSA for years, getting clients ready for it's arrival. Well, it's finally here and so far we have all survived. Myself and a handful of clients took part in the pilot for 2025/26. There have been teething problems, but it means we are prepared for the real deal that started in April 2026.

Quarterly submissions all went well under the pilot, but we have discovered quite a bit since trying to complete the final declarations for pilot clients. A lot of the software has not yet been fully developed, leading to delays in submissions. This should all be sorted by the time we get to April 2027.

The only other issue we have come across is ensuring mapping of data so it is all gathered in the MTD reports. Depending on the software used, determines how straightforward this is. So far, we have used Kashflow, Sage, QBO and TaxCalc for submissions. I'm not going to say which is easiest to use, they all have their pro's & con's.

Initial conclusions - still some ironing out of rough edges to do, but it appears to be heading in the right direction. Clients have been timely in the first quarterly submissions, enabling us to get the job done efficiently 😀

Twenty years ago Nicola started the business and today we celebrated that milestone with a day at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve.

Twenty years is a big achievement, and it says a lot about Nicola’s determination, resilience and steady drive. All of which were evident in her excellent buggy driving, even though we knew she’d been a bit nervous beforehand.
