Inheritance Tax rules are changing - and for some families, the impact could be significant.

From 6 April 2027, most unused defined contribution pension funds are expected to be included within an individual’s estate when calculating Inheritance Tax. This means some families who may not previously have faced an Inheritance Tax liability could find their position has changed.

The good news is that there is time to prepare.

In our blog, we look at what the changes could mean in practice, using a straightforward example to show how an estate could be affected. We also explore why reviewing your pensions, investments and wider estate planning now can provide greater clarity for you and your family.

Good financial planning is about looking ahead and making informed decisions while you have the opportunity to do so.

If you’ve changed jobs several times throughout your career, there’s a good chance you’ve accumulated more than one pension along the way.

But as retirement gets closer, an important question arises: do you know what they’re all worth - and what they could actually provide in retirement?

Bringing your pensions into a clearer overall picture can help you understand where you stand, whether you’re on track and what options are available. For some people, pension consolidation may form part of that plan - although it isn’t right for everyone, particularly where existing pensions include valuable guarantees or benefits.

There’s also another consideration on the horizon. From April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits will be included within an estate for Inheritance Tax purposes, making it increasingly important to consider pensions as part of your wider retirement and estate planning.

In our latest blog, we explore pension consolidation, the questions to consider as retirement approaches and why now could be a good time to get your pensions organised.

What difference can proactive tax planning make?

For one of our clients, it meant an immediate reduction in their tax liability of more than £10,000 - alongside a clearer financial strategy and greater confidence in their long-term plans.

For higher earners, tax planning can become increasingly complex. Income, investments, savings and pensions all need to work together as part of a considered, tax-efficient approach.

In our latest case study, we look at how we helped a high-earning professional review their tax position and make better use of available allowances across pensions, ISAs and investments.

The result was not simply a lower tax bill, but a more joined-up financial plan designed around their wider goals.

What is Inheritance Tax - and could it affect you?

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax that may be payable on the value of your estate when you die.

Your estate can include your property, savings, investments and possessions. From April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits are also due to be included within estates for IHT purposes.

IHT is generally charged at 40% on the portion of an estate that exceeds the available allowances and exemptions. However, what is actually payable will depend on your individual circumstances, including who you leave your assets to and which reliefs or exemptions apply.

With the rules changing in April 2027, understanding the potential value of your estate is becoming even more important.

Good estate planning can help you build a clear picture of your position, make informed use of the allowances available and consider how you would like your wealth to be passed on.

We can help you understand what the changing IHT landscape could mean for you and your family.
