If you need to use your car for work (not simply just for travelling to or from work) you'll now be able to claim tax relief on 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles driven in the tax year. This is up 10p from 45p per mile. Although only announced this week it can be backdated to 6 April 2026.

📢 Reminder for parents of 16–19 year olds:

If your teenager is continuing in approved education or training after their GCSEs, you’ll need to extend your Child Benefit claim to keep receiving payments.

Child Benefit will automatically stop on 31 August after your child turns 16 unless you confirm their plans with HMRC.

This applies to approved full-time education (such as A-levels or equivalent) or certain training programmes (but not higher education like university).

Make sure you respond to HMRC’s letter or update your details online to avoid any interruption to your payments.

If you’re unsure whether your child’s course qualifies, it’s worth checking or seeking advice.

Unpopular opinion from an accountant: doing your own Making Tax Digital isn’t saving you money it’s costing you 💸

Yes, you can do it yourself.

But if you charge £75 an hour and spend five hours a month on MTD, that’s £375 gone. Every month. On admin ⏳

Add software fees and suddenly “DIY” isn’t cheaper it’s just unpaid work 😬

And that’s before mistakes, missed reliefs, or zero tax planning 📉

So, when you say you’re saving money… you’re not.

You’re just choosing to be your own lowest-paid employee 👀

The real question isn’t “Do I need an accountant?”

It’s: why are you doing £75 an hour work for free? 🤔

If you or someone you know are having this self-debate, feel free to get in contact and call the office on 01732 760387

📢 Important Update for Business Owners 📢

From 1st April, Companies House will cease its free service for filing company accounts and company tax returns.
Businesses will need to use commercial software or an accountant to submit future filings.
It’s also important to be aware that access to historical filings through this service will be removed, as these records are being deleted. If you may need copies for your records, now is the time to download them.
For existing Lakeview clients, there is no impact—everything will continue as normal.
If you know someone who may be affected by these changes and would like guidance, we would be more than happy to speak with them.
If you have any questions about how this change may affect you or your business, Lakeview will be happy to help.

🔔 Statutory Sick Pay Changes from 6 April 2026 – What Employers Need to Know

From 6 April 2026, significant changes to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will take effect under new employment legislation. These reforms will expand eligibility and increase employer responsibility when employees are off sick.

Here are the key changes:

1️⃣ SSP will be payable from day one
The current system includes three unpaid “waiting days” before SSP begins. From April 2026, this waiting period is removed, meaning SSP is payable from the first qualifying day of sickness absence.

2️⃣ Lower Earnings Limit removed
Currently, employees must earn at least the Lower Earnings Limit to qualify for SSP. From April, this threshold is abolished, meaning many lower-paid and part-time workers will become eligible for SSP for the first time.

3️⃣ New SSP calculation method
SSP will be the lower of:
• £123.25 per week, or
• 80% of the employee’s average weekly earnings

Average weekly earnings are based on the 8 weeks prior to the sickness absence.

What this means for employers
✔ More employees may qualify for SSP
✔ Possible increased payroll cost exposure for short-term absences
✔ Payroll systems and sickness policies may need updating

If you’re an employer, now is a good time to review your sickness absence procedures and payroll processes before the new rules come into effect to ensure they reflect the above changes.
