Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live

As of 6 April, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now in effect for sole traders and landlords with gross income over £50,000.

Across the last week, we’ve seen a lot of noise online. Penalty concerns, software frustration, and confusion about what actually applies.

Here is the A4G take on the week one noise:

✅ It’s about turnover, not profit
There is still confusion here. If your gross income is over £50k, you are in scope. Don’t wait for a letter to tell you what you should already know.

✅ Software is a tool, not a tax
There is understandable frustration about cost. But moving to real-time digital records gives you something far more valuable: clearer visibility of margins and performance throughout the year, not just at year end when it’s too late to act.

✅ Bridge or build?
“Bridging software” is trending for those sticking with spreadsheets. But we’re advising clients to use this moment to build a more robust, automated finance function.

The goal: Don’t just aim for compliance. Aim for a better-run business. The first quarterly update isn’t due until August, but the digital trail starts now.

As we spend our final few days at Kings Lodge, there is one box we’re handling with extra care: our collection of Johnson’s Café memorabilia.

From the ‘Death Hill’ legends to the building's days as a nightclub where Pete Tong launched his career, this site has been a hub of energy for decades. We aren’t leaving that spirit behind; the scrabook of photos of the bikers and the jukebox stories will have a place of honour in our new office.

A4G was built on nurturing talent. Our Co-Managing Partners, Emma White and Josh Curties, both started their careers here as trainees, and that commitment continues today.

Our new office in Nepicar House has been designed with our team in mind, including the six new trainees who joined us last year. This modern space provides the environment our team needs to collaborate, grow, and continue providing the proactive advice our clients rely on.

We’re moving in April to ensure we have the space to keep doing things our way: remaining independent and focused on your growth.

Before it was A4G, Kings Lodge was known to many as Johnson’s Café.

In the 60s and 70s, it was a legendary haunt where bikers would take on ‘the challenge’ - racing past Brands Hatch to the next roundabout and back before a single song finished on the jukebox. It even earned the stretch of road leading to Farningham the nickname ‘Death Hill.’

We’ve spent the last 26 years as the custodians of this history. We still have bikers drop by today to reminisce and look through the scrapbooks in our reception. While we are moving to Nepicar House soon, we are taking those memories and photos with us.
