💼Role: Payroll Manager

☕️What is your go to coffee order?
My go to coffee order is a simple black coffee with half a sugar. According to the team, my instant coffee making skills have become highly rated and they now expect coffee shop quality whenever I’m near a kettle.

🎾What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I’m usually keeping active on a court somewhere, whether that’s padel, pickleball, or badminton. I love playing racket sports while hoping it adds to my step count and having a laugh at the same time.

🌟 Early Bird or Night Owl?
Definitely an early bird. I have to get up at least 30 minutes before I need to so that I can relax with a cup of coffee in my lovely garden. Perfect way to start the day!

💼What have you enjoyed most about your role so far?
What I've enjoyed most about the role so far is the problem-solving aspect and supporting the businesses through accurate payroll delivery.

Words to describe my colleagues – brilliant, top-tier efficient and friendly all at the same time!

🚨 PAYE vs CIS: Getting it wrong can be expensive.

Mistaking a worker as CIS instead of PAYE (or vice versa) means HMRC may see their employment status as misclassified, which can lead to penalties, back taxes, and payroll corrections.

👉 PAYE = Employees
Tax & National Insurance are deducted directly through payroll.

👉 CIS = Self-employed subcontractors
Contractors usually deduct 20%/30% towards tax, while the subcontractor manages their own Self-Assessment.

If the wrong scheme has been used, businesses may need to:
✔ Update the worker’s status
✔ Refund overpaid tax
✔ Submit amended payroll filings

A simple classification mistake can quickly become a costly compliance issue.

📺What’s your guilty pleasure TV show or film?
Grey’s Anatomy. At this point I should get an honorary medical degree.

☀️ What do you enjoy doing on your days off?
On my days off, I usually spend time with my friends or partner, since we try to line up our time off. We’ll usually go for lunch, a walk, or do a bit of shopping.

🧅Sweet or Savory?
Savory, apparently pickled onions with cocktail sausages isn’t everyone’s idea of a great work snack, but here we are.

👩‍💼What’s your favourite thing about working at S Smith & Co?
The variety of work, it’s helped me build experience across lots of different areas of accounting.

This week we’re introducing Natalie, our Director at S Smith & Co. 🎉 We asked Natalie some questions for you to get to know her better.

🪣 What’s one thing on your bucket list?
A trip to India is definitely on my bucket list. I’d love to experience the culture and cuisine, and visiting the Taj Mahal in person is something I’ve always wanted to do.

🏃 What’s a hobby you love outside of work?
Running is my main hobby - although it’s definitely a bit of a love-hate relationship! Some days I’m full of enthusiasm, and other days it takes real motivation to get out the door. I enjoy visiting different Parkruns on Saturdays, though if I’m honest, the post-run coffee and socialising are often the highlight. I’m currently training for my first marathon in October, so there are plenty of miles ahead!

👥If you could describe the team in one word, what would it be?
Dedicated – Everyone in the team is committed to delivering excellent service and going the extra mile for our clients.

🏆What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing both our clients and our team succeed is incredibly rewarding. I feel fortunate to lead and work alongside such a dedicated team. I particularly enjoy helping clients navigate challenges and achieve their goals while also supporting and developing the people around me.
