A lot of people set up limited companies without fully understanding what being a director actually means.

It’s very easy to start a company, take on debt, and assume the limited company protects you from everything.

But directors still have legal duties, and “I didn’t know” usually isn’t a defence when things go wrong.

Having a limited company does give protection in many situations, but only if you’re running things properly.

Creditor threatening legal action?

Please don’t ignore it.

If it’s a debt you know you owe but can’t afford to repay, you need advice early because it can quickly escalate into CCJs, statutory demands, and even winding up petitions.

And if the debt is disputed, get legal advice before things progress further.

A lot of directors don’t realise how serious it’s become until it’s too late.

Expenses are where a lot of people get it wrong.

I’ve seen people claim nothing and miss out on money they’re entitled to, and others try to claim everything and create problems without realising.

In one case, reviewing things properly saved £1,000 just by claiming what was allowed.

If it’s business, claim it. If there’s personal use, it needs to be split.

Guessing usually means overpaying or creating issues later.
