What do we actually do at VA Accountancy?

A lot more than year end accounts and tax returns.

We work closely with business owners to help them stay organised, understand their finances properly, and feel more confident in the numbers behind their business.

From bookkeeping and payroll through to tax planning, cloud accounting and day to day support, we aim to make things clearer, less stressful, and easier to manage.

No jargon. No overcomplicating things. Just practical support from a team that genuinely wants to help your business run smoothly.

This morning Leah, Zack and Verity headed over to Signal Business Hub in Tiverton for a spot of networking.

There was plenty of coffee, plenty of conversation, and a room full of local businesses all looking to support one another.

It's always good to step away from the day to day and spend time building relationships with people who are passionate about what they do.

Thank you to Signal Business Hub for hosting us.

Leah joined the team at VA Accountancy in March 2025, after deciding to go back into practice after exploring different routes in accountancy.

Leah is a qualified accountant with over seven years of experience, specialising in preparing the year-end accounts and tax returns for clients. She is dedicated, detail-oriented, and takes pride in delivering a reliable and professional service. She loves making the financial side of things feel a little less daunting for her clients!

Outside of work, you’ll usually find Leah exploring new walking spots with the dogs, making the most of family time outdoors, or indulging in a little retail therapy. Leah is always up for discovering somewhere new, whether that’s a countryside trail, a hidden gem food spot, or the next shopping trip! And of course, she believes life’s better with a holiday or two to look forward to!

Making Tax Digital is getting closer, and the businesses that prepare early are going to feel the least disruption when the changes fully arrive.

If you’ve not checked where you currently stand, now is a good time to start reviewing things like bookkeeping processes, software, record keeping, and how regularly your figures are updated.

Leaving it until the last minute usually creates unnecessary stress, rushed decisions, and avoidable mistakes.

A few small changes now can make the transition much smoother later on.

We’ve also added a quick MTD checker to our website which helps you understand whether the changes are likely to affect you and when you may need to comply.

After 15 years without an increase, the approved business mileage rate is finally changing.

Following HMRC's recent announcement, the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rate will increase to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles travelled each tax year, backdated to 6 April 2026.

The rate for mileage over 10,000 miles remains unchanged at 25p per mile.

This follows confirmation on 6 May that the Government would review the rate, with today's announcement delivering the first increase in over a decade.

If you employ staff who travel for business, now is a good time to review your mileage reimbursement rates and payroll processes. If you're self employed and claim a deduction, your software is likely to be updated to reflect this but keep an eye on it.

If you're unsure how these changes affect your business, we'd be happy to help.

Could your business claim up to £10,500 off its employer National Insurance bill in 2026/27?

Employment Allowance could make a real difference to your payroll costs, but many employers still miss it. If you run a business with employees, remember you will need to submit a claim for the new tax year, if you qualify, remember to check your eligibility and make sure your claim is in place through your payroll software.

Some employers are excluded, including certain single-director companies. If you’re unsure whether you qualify, get advice before you miss out.

Meet Vicky.

Vicky joined VA Accountancy in October 2022 as an Administrator after relocating to Devon from Hampshire. She is the first point of contact when you drop in or call with a welcoming smile and refreshments at the ready.

Her key organisational skills assist Verity and the team in the day to day running of the practice from onboarding new clients, maintaining client records, calendar management, filing, assisting with meeting deadlines, handling client queries and streamlining administrative workflows ensuring that VA’s daily operations run smoothly. Her years of experience working in different industries have established her key skills in office management and client support.

When Vicky is not at work she loves nothing more than spending time at the beach with family and her gorgeous black labrador Mabel, socialising with friends, gardening and travelling when time permits.

Over the past few days, Verity, Leah and Zack travelled to London to attend Accountex.

The event gave us a great opportunity to reconnect with our software partners, learn about upcoming developments and attend several insightful seminars.

We returned to the office with fresh ideas for internal planning and for improving how we support our clients.
