A 2 minute read to summarise the key changes and the impacts of The Chancellor's Autumn Budget.

First, frozen tax thresholds: Income tax and National Insurance thresholds will remain frozen until 2031. Although wages have risen since 2021, these thresholds haven’t, which effectively means a larger portion of your income may now be taxed, and you might find yourself in a higher tax band. If you’re working, contributing to a pension could help lower your taxable income and keep you in a lower bracket.

For pensioners, the triple lock will increase the State Pension. However, if you have even a modest workplace pension in addition, it may push your total income above the personal allowance, resulting in more of it being taxed.

Next, let’s talk about Cash ISAs. From 2027, the annual limit for contributions to a cash ISA will be reduced to £12,000. Most savers won’t be affected, as only about 16% of people currently reach the maximum ISA limit. Over-65s can still contribute up to £20,000, which is beneficial for older savers wanting to put more into cash ISAs. The £20,000 limit for Stocks and Shares ISAs remains unchanged.

Finally, regarding salary sacrifice: This arrangement allows employees to give up part of their salary in exchange for their employer making pension contributions, thereby saving on National Insurance. Not all employers offer it, but for those who do, it’s been a useful way to boost pension savings. From 2029 onward, the amount of salary that can be sacrificed for National Insurance savings will be capped at £2,000. This could mean that higher earners might see a smaller portion of their salary going into their pension under this scheme.....

Did you know......

Savers with £3,500 or more tucked away could be hit with an unexpected tax demand from His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

HMRC has the capability to automatically detect interest accrued in your bank account, and if your savings interest exceeds a certain limit, you'll be issued a notice for additional tax.

Burns’ original Scots verse.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’lltak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak’ a right gude-willie waught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

English translation

and old lang syne?

CHORUS:

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.
