Year‑end payroll reminder for employers: P60s
As we move through the payroll year‑end, a quick reminder that employers must provide a P60 to all employees by the end of May.

A P60 summarises:
• total pay for the tax year
• income tax deducted
• National Insurance contributions

It’s an important document for employees - used for tax returns, mortgage or loan applications, and personal records.

For employers, this is also a good moment to:
• review year‑end payroll processes
• communicate clearly with staff
• ensure records are complete and accurate

Payroll isn’t just about running numbers - it’s about trust, clarity and good record‑keeping at every stage.

Have you noticed that as your business grows, cash somehow feels tighter - not easier?

One of the biggest surprises for business owners is that increasing sales often puts more pressure on cash, not less.

You might recognise some of these situations:
You start working with bigger clients, but they pay on longer terms
You need to invest in stock, people or systems before the income lands
Your VAT bill grows as turnover increases
Payroll commitments rise faster than the cash sitting in the bank

On paper, your business looks like it’s doing well but day to day, cash feels under strain.

This isn’t a sign of poor management - it’s a very normal phase of growth.

What makes the biggest difference is visibility: knowing exactly when money is coming in, when it’s going out, and how growth decisions affect cash in the short term. Business owners who tackle this early stay in control.

Those who don’t often feel the pressure long before the numbers tell the story.

Small Business Growth Series - Part 1: Cash flow vs profit

One of the most common (and costly) misunderstandings we see in growing businesses is assuming profit equals cash.

A business can look profitable on paper - and still struggle to pay suppliers, VAT, or payroll.

A few real‑world examples:
• You’ve made a healthy profit, but customers haven’t paid their invoices yet
• You’ve invested in stock or equipment, reducing cash but increasing future value
• VAT is due, but the cash has already been spent elsewhere

Profit measures performance. Cash flow measures survival.

As businesses grow, understanding the difference - and managing both - becomes critical to making confident decisions.

In the next parts of this series, we’ll look at how businesses can get better visibility and control as complexity increases.

Last week, our very own Claire Emery sat down with Ben Thomas from All Things Business UK to record a podcast – and it’s one we’re incredibly proud of.

Claire shares her career journey and the story behind how our Rushden office first began. It’s an honest reflection on the challenges she faced, the hard work that went into building the firm, and how it’s grown into what it is today.

What really stands out is Claire’s openness – talking about resilience, progression, and balancing life outside of work alongside professional ambitions. It’s a conversation that so many people will relate to.

At Elsby & Co, we see that dedication and determination every day. Claire leads by example, and she continues to inspire everyone across the firm.
And for our clients, it’s a reminder that you’re in incredibly safe hands.

Sometimes all it takes is the right opportunity – and someone willing to make the very most of it.

We’re not the right accountants for everyone - and that’s intentional.

If you’re looking for a purely transactional service, focused only on deadlines and filings, we may not be the best fit.

But if you’re growing, facing bigger decisions, and want an advisor who genuinely understands your business - that’s where we add real value.

We take time to build relationships, ask the right questions, and support clients through the challenges that come with growth.

Because growth brings pressure - and having the right people alongside you matters.

We’ve recently received some excellent feedback following an annual audit we carried out for a client, led by Amy and our audit team.

What makes this especially meaningful is the work that’s gone on behind the scenes over the past few years to strengthen our audit team, refine our approach, and ensure audits are well‑planned, well‑communicated and genuinely useful for clients.

An audit should never feel like a box‑ticking exercise. It should be structured, collaborative, and leave businesses with confidence - and, where appropriate, clear opportunities to improve.

It’s great to receive feedback that confirms we’re heading in the right direction. Huge thanks to the client, and well done Amy and the wider team 👏

Why your P60 matters more than you might think.

Your P60 isn’t just a year‑end form - it’s the official summary of salary and tax for the year.

It plays a key role in:
• Personal tax returns
• Verifying income
• Checking payroll accuracy
• Supporting funding or mortgage applications

For business owners and directors, it’s especially important because it ties payroll, personal tax, and wider tax planning together.

It’s one of those documents that often only gets looked at when there’s a problem - but reviewing it early is far easier.

It’s often the small details that catch people out.

One example we’re flagging for personal tax clients is the Winter Fuel Payment.

If someone is over State Pension age and has taxable income above £35,000, any Winter Fuel Payment received must be declared and repaid through their tax return.

These aren’t headline‑grabbing rules - but they matter. And missing them can lead to unnecessary repayments, penalties, or stress later on.

Good advice isn’t just about filing returns. It’s about asking the right questions at the right time.
