How sure are you that you know your VAT liability on a month by month basis?

Once transactions come through on accounting software from your bank feed, do you check the overall figures or do you think great there are no transactions left to reconcile?!

Our top tip for June is that you pull up your profit and loss report, to drill down on the data.
You don't have to wait for your accountant to do it, you can generate your VAT return any time, throughout a quarter, so you will have a pretty good idea of your VAT liability is going to be at the end of the quarter.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has been live for a while now!

J is for Journal...

No, not the “dear diary” type.

In accounting, a Journal is used to record transactions and adjustments in your accounts.
Everything from wages, depreciation, corrections or moving figures between accounts can be journalled.

It's basically the way we keep everything in order behind-the-scenes to make sure your numbers are as accurate and up to date as possible.

It might not be the most exciting part of accounting, but it's definitely one of the important ones.

Have you been chasing more unpaid sales invoices?

Here's some questions you need to ask yourself IF you're finding more and more late payers giving you the runaround!

Do you actually have a system for chasing them up?
Do you send reminders when invoices are overdue?
Do you send statements?
Do you follow up and ask when payment will be made?
Do you ask if there is a problem with the invoice if it has not been paid?

Remember...
A sale is great, but a sale that you know is 100% going to be paid in full, on time, and within your payment terms is even better.
