Do you know what you are merrily clicking “OK” to?

Accounting software saves time, brings everything together in one place...

But it doesn't always get things 100% right.

When it suggests a match to reconcile a transaction, it is still worth checking before you accept it.

A quick click now could mean incorrect records later.

Wrong matches can affect your bookkeeping, your VAT, your reports and the information your accountant is working from.

So before you merrily click “OK”, pause for a second and make sure the match actually makes sense.

Not sure what you are looking at?
Reach out to Cube Accounting today and we'll guide you through what to check.

One to watch...
EV charging.

A recent VAT case found that some public electric vehicle charging could qualify for the reduced 5% VAT rate, rather than the usual 20%.

But before anyone starts changing VAT rates, this is not settled yet. It's expected that HMRC will be appealing the decision, so the position may change.

VAT can be complicated, especially when the rules are being tested in court.

If you're unsure about what VAT rate applies to your products or services, do get in touch before making any changes.

Let us tell you the story of a recent potential client to Cube...

A few weeks ago, Anne meet with a Plumber.
He told Anne: "I do up to 4 small jobs a day and after materials I quote £200 a day."

Anne asked him: "What about the other costs in your business…?"

He looked back at her blankly.

"What about the costs it takes to run your van, to cover your business insurance, accountancy fees and other business costs?" Anne probed...

On a deeper dive it turns out these costs add up to around £1,000 a month on average.

"So..." Anne recommended, "If you want to have a day rate of £200 you need to add £50 to your quotes, each day, to cover the £1,000 it costs you a month to cover all of your business costs, not just the materials!"

This simple conversation with a potential client, made him realise why he was working so hard for so little.

His current accountant hadn't broken down his numbers to help him, all they had done was just calculated his tax!

We're pleased to say within a couple of hours of receiving Anne's follow up quote this person decided to switch to Cube.

It might sound simple, but you'd be surprised how many people aren't covering all of their costs.
If this might be you, get in touch for a complimentary call and we'll do our very best to help you get the best out of your business.

Are you CIS registered or do you know someone who is?

From 6 April 2026, Construction Industry Scheme rules changed.

Contractors now need to either file a CIS return every month, including nil returns, or tell HMRC in advance that no subcontractors will be paid that month...

Late filing penalties are also back, starting from £100.

There's also tougher rules around Gross Payment Status, fraud-linked payments and reapplication timescales.

If CIS applies to you, this is one to stay on top of.

Did you know you don't have to be brilliant at maths to build a successful business?

Some of the best business owners are:

💡Creative thinkers
🎤 Brilliant communicators
💷 Natural salespeople
✅ Incredible problem-solvers

When you know what your strengths are you can be an amazing success.

And in business, knowing when to partner with others who are great at the bits you don't like is equally as important.

Interestingly, in 2025 across England around 70% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths, but confidence around numbers and finances still continues to be something lots of adults struggle with.

So, if numbers are not your thing?
You are definitely not alone.

That is exactly why plain-speaking accountants, like the team at Cube become central for a business owner.
