Many business owners have up to date Bookkeeping.

Great.

But are their books accurate?

There is a big difference between:

✅ Transactions entered

and

✅ Transactions entered correctly

Bookkeeping done means data exists.

Bookkeeping done well means you can trust your numbers.

One helps you submit a tax return.

The other helps you run a business.

With the first MTD quarter coming to an end, I am offering a limited number of review slots in the first two weeks of July, meaning that if you have been doing your own Bookkeeping we'll review what you have done and will give you a clear, actionable list of what you need to do to make sure your Bookkeeping is accurate.

I currently have 7 of those slots left for Xero and Quickbooks users.

Comment "Tell me more". And I will send you more info.

With Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, people often focus on the admin burden of quarterly deadlines.

But the real change is simpler:
Bookkeeping can’t be left to the end of the year anymore. You now have to look at it at least once every quarter, which will make your life a lot easier at the end of the year.

The good news is that those quarterly submissions don't have to be perfect. You can still make changes and additions throughout the year and they'll just be added to the next quarterly submission.

And at the end of the year you'll be able to claim for expenses such as your mileage and work from home allowances.

Do you tend to keep on top of your Bookkeeping or do it all at once at the end of the year?

A worrying thing is happening.

Business owners are increasingly asking AI bookkeeping questions and assuming the answer is correct.

The problem?

AI sounds confident whether it's right or wrong.

If you ask:

"Can I claim this expense?"

You might get a perfectly written answer that doesn't apply to your situation.

And if you don't understand the basics of Bookkeeping, you won't know the difference.

AI is a brilliant assistant.

It is not a replacement for understanding your own business finances.

The goal isn't to avoid AI.

The goal is to know enough Bookkeeping to spot when AI is giving you bad advice.

What bookkeeping task have you been tempted to hand over completely to AI?

If you're learning to manage your own books, comment COURSE and I'll send details of my Essential Bookkeeping for UK Sole Traders course.

MTD requires digital record-keeping.

That doesn’t necessarily mean complex software overload, but it does mean your records need to be structured in a way that can feed into submissions.

It’s less about tools, more about consistency of data.

Are you currently using software, spreadsheets, or a bit of both?

Accounting Software is great but make sure you know what you are doing!

Don't get me wrong, I love using Accounting Software, but it gets me when I see it advertised as being the solution to all of your Bookkeeping worries. I mean those messages along the lines of, just sign up to our software and do your bookkeeping in a breeze.

The reason this messaging gets me is because it oversimplifies the process. There is so much more to bookkeeping than just reconciling transactions and even when doing that, a lot can go wrong.

There is a huge difference between dividends, salaries and drawings for example, not just in terms of reporting but also in terms of your tax liability.

Also, how you treat personal expenses is very important.

And don't get me started on duplications...

I do get, I am a big fan of doing as much as you can by yourself, but my advice is to make sure you know what you are doing to avoid the year end troubles. And don't rely on your Accountant to pick it all up. If you are only paying them to submit your tax return without a basic review then chances are that your submissions will be wrong and legally it's your responsibility to make sure they are right.

Of course I wouldn't be doing my job, if I didn't tell you that I can help with getting you set up right and show you how it's done properly.

I really think some Sole Traders are going to walk into MTD Power Days feeling completely overwhelmed…

…and walk out thinking:

“OK. I can actually do this.”

That shift matters so much, because confidence changes everything.

Once people understand:
• what HMRC actually wants
• what software they need
• what routine to follow

…everything starts feeling lighter.

That’s what I want these two days to give people.

The bit I’m MOST excited about with MTD Power Days?

Monday.

Because that’s when things stop being theoretical.

People will come back having chosen their software over the weekend…

…and we’ll actually help them get set up.

Properly.

Not:
“Here’s a login screen — good luck.”

I mean:
• setting things up step by step
• understanding what records to keep
• learning simple Bookkeeping routines
• making MTD feel manageable in real life

I use AI almost every day in my business.

It saves time.
Reduces admin.
Keeps costs lower for clients.

Technology should evolve.
And businesses that ignore it completely will probably struggle.

But I’ll be honest.

I’m becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the narrative that AI can replace Bookkeepers and Accountants.

Because good bookkeeping is not just data entry.

It’s judgement.
Context.
Pattern recognition.
Understanding legislation.
Spotting inconsistencies.
Knowing when something “doesn’t look right”.

A software platform cannot fully understand:

* the reality of how a business operates
* the intent behind transactions
* the nuances of tax rules
* the behaviour patterns that often reveal errors

And the danger is that many business owners are being encouraged to believe compliance is now fully “handled” by technology alone.

That creates false confidence.

Bookkeeping often looks simple on the surface until small mistakes start sn*******ng.

So do me a favour and use AI, but make sure you know the basics of Bookkeeping and how your Accounting software works so you can spot mistakes early.

I wonder how many Sole Traders are quietly panicking about Making Tax Digital right now.

“I really need to sort this.”
“I don’t understand it.”
“I don’t know where to start.”

And the worst part?

Most people think they’re the only one confused.

You’re not.

I’ve been having conversation after conversation with Sole Traders who feel completely overwhelmed by MTD for Income Tax.

Which is exactly why I created MTD Power Days.

Because I genuinely think people need MORE than information right now.

They need someone to actually walk them through it properly.

We are nearly 2 months through Q1 of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

But don't worry if you have been sticking your head in the sand and hoping that this will just go away by itself somehow.

If you were mandated into Making Tax Digital this year then you can still sign up now. It will mean a bit of backtracking your work, but it will make your life a lot easier when your first submission is due on the 7th August.

Not sure where to start? Give me a shout and I'll share some useful resources.
