21 October 1966 – We will never forget Aberfan.
Today marks 60 years since the Aberfan disaster, one of the darkest days in Welsh history.
At 9:13am, a colliery spoil tip collapsed, sending a devastating avalanche of coal waste down onto the village of Aberfan, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes.
144 lives were lost, including 116 children. Families, a community and a nation were left heartbroken.
Today, we remember every child, every adult and every family affected by this unimaginable tragedy. We also remember the courage, compassion and strength shown by the people of Aberfan and those who came to help.
Six decades on, their memory lives on in the hearts of Wales and beyond.
