Game of Trivial Benefits anyone?
They are a really simple way to give your team a little something extra without creating a tax headache but are allowable spend for corporation tax.
There are some rules that are very important to follow
- A trivial benefit must cost £50 (inc vat) or less per person
- It can’t be cash or a cash voucher (but can be shop gift voucher)
- It can’t be a reward for performance or a bonus
- It should be thought of as a “nice gesture” rather than part of someone’s pay package.
What counts?
- A birthday gift
- A bottle of something nice at Christmas
- A thank you for helping out on a busy week
- Flowers or a small treat when someone needs a boost
What doesn’t work is using them as bonuses in disguise or giving them every month like clockwork. Once it becomes expected or regular it breaks HMRC rules.
Used properly, they’re a great way to show appreciation, boost morale and keep things tax efficient.
If you’re not sure whether something counts or you want to use them properly without falling into a trap, feel free to drop me a message.

I've been cold called recently by several HR/Legal consultancies asking me if I know about the changes employee rights starting in April and continuing into 2027.
Luckily, I am aware of this and know some fantastic local small businesses who specialise in this who I would much rather collaborate with.
If you looked at the picture and had no idea any of these changes were coming then please drop me a line and I'll put you in touch with them. Now is the time to act to get everything in order before the changes are implemented.

***Phishing Alert***

Received this email purporting to be from Intuit QuickBooks at 1510 today. Looks good doesn't it, the text looks like it is something you should click on and take action. DON'T!!!! Further investigation reveals it is not from Quickbooks and is a phishing email looking to harvest your data.

Does this look familiar to you?

The carrier bag of doom.
Inside you will find receipts, crumpled invoices, HMRC letters, sweet wrappers… basically everything except clear details of your business finances.
We don't do 'carrier bag' clients but we DO help move clients from chaos to calm, organised, digital bookkeeping.
We set up clients on Xero / QuickBooks / Freeagent and we show them an easy way to stay on top of things, making it as painless as possible.
No judgement, no jargon, and definitely no more carrier bags full of mystery paperwork.
If you know a sole trader or limited company who is still running their accounts like it’s 1997, please drop me a line so that they can put that bag back into use for shopping not stress.

The National Living Wage is increasing again, and for anyone employing staff this is one change you really do need to factor in.

This is not the same as the Real Living Wage, which is voluntary and set higher based on living costs. The National Living Wage is the legal minimum, and employers must pay at least this amount.

For many businesses, this is not just about paying staff more per hour. It affects employer National Insurance, pension contributions, overtime, holiday pay, and overall payroll budgets.

If you employ people, now is a good time to check your payroll costs and make sure pricing and cash flow still stack up for the year ahead.

So take a moment today to share some kindness. You never know how much it might mean to someone.

Been selling regularly online through eBay, Vinted, Etsy or social media?

HMRC has written to thousands of people who may have undeclared income. Even small amounts can create a tax responsibility if trading is regular and for profit.

If you got a letter or are unsure what counts as a hobby, message us and we can help. Better to sort it early than leave it for HMRC to follow up.
