A couple in their early 60s sat down with me recently, worried they didn’t have enough to retire.
They had about £600,000 in pensions and savings — but still felt unsure.
Why?
Because it’s not about how much you’ve saved — it’s about what that money can do for you.

Can it support the lifestyle you want?
Will it last your full retirement?
Are you making the most of tax opportunities?
What about "what if" scenarios.....for example if one of you passes away or needs long term care.

Most people don’t realise the real risk isn’t running out of money — it’s making decisions too late.
In the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing tips for couples 5–10 years from retirement to avoid costly mistakes and plan with confidence.

The most important takeaway from the budget today 🤔 👇

Nothing is (still) certain in life except death and taxes.

However, the big question we all have around money stays the same ⬇

Are we doing the right things to get to the lifestyle we want in the future and will we have enough money to last us when we get there?

What did you think of the budget? Well balanced for the needs of the country moving forward , or again going after those "with the biggest shoulders" who contribute the most in taxes already to society?

Will you have enough money to enjoy a comfortable retirement? 👇

If you knew specifically how much money you needed to retire and live the lifestyle you want without worry about running out of money, how would that change how you view your finances now and when picturing your future?

Would you worry less and feel more peace of mind around your money?

Everyone`s "number" is different, and what a good life looks like for them and their families varies.

But what is the same for all the clients I see is, that peace of mind from knowing where they are now financially and what the current future looks like helps them immensely in discussing any planning.

When you know your current financial path and what the future is likely to be like if you carry on as you are, then any steps you may need to take to get to the life you want become easier.

This reminds me of some of the issues I raise with clients around second homes as an investment....

Leveraging borrowing to purchase a second home works both ways if the price goes down.
When you come to sell you may find it hard and time consuming and costly to get a buyer at the price you want.
Its hard to sell a bit of a house if you are looking at covering a smaller expenditure.
Capital gains tax on investment properties is high, it will eat into profits you may have made.

Not to say property cant be a good investment but its important to weigh the pros and cons before jumping in.

😎 Proud to be featured in The Times as a top rated adviser on VouchedFor (Although I work in Newcastle I am the only one featured in Whitby where I also help clients 💪)

This is based on real client reviews and I'm grateful for their continuing support.

Five things I would look for when deciding on a financial adviser:

✅ Someone who is more interested in you than your money.

✅ Can articulate in 20 seconds in plain English their investment philosophy (that an average 12 year old could understand).

✅ Can explain simply what they charge, and the value you will get from working with them and what makes them different to the rest.

✅ Is comfortable telling you the hard truths when needed.

✅ Your gut tells you they are trustworthy.

A friend asked me for some help and guidance. 👂

They didn't want financial advice, just for me to quickly look over their monthly spending and offer any suggestions. ✅

I asked if they needed to lease the car they currently had as it was quite expensive, or if something more affordable might be just as good for their needs as they wanted to cut back somewhere. 🚗

They said it would likely "only" save around £80 a month to get something cheaper and they like their car now more than the saving they could make so didn't want to do that.

I showed them this chart 👇 (they have 27 years to retirement age). I think we were both surprised that this one change could potentially have such an impact*.

I doubt they will change the car, but it did get me thinking about my own spending and the effects of compounding over enough time on my own future plans.

I wonder what changes other people could make, or have made that might increase their retirement pots by near £100k?

*Starting with £0, assuming 5% growth on an investment and increasing the saving by 5% a year (as the car costs would likely have gone up by this anyway), they would end up with near £100,000 extra in savings.

Not to be taken as financial advice. The value of investments and any income derived from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount you invested.

When I sit with new clients and ask them my two big questions:

What does a successful relationship with us look like over the next five or ten years?

What is your one major financial worry right now?

They never say I want an expert in tax planning, pensions or insurance advice.

But they all want financial peace of mind about where they are now and where they are heading in the future.

What we believe is that all financial planning should be built around helping clients get to and maintain the lifestyle they want, no matter what happens to them.

That's why we focus on this when communicating what we do to potential clients.
