We have had an important update regarding the new mileage rates announced yesterday, which may be relevant to many employees and employers across the UK.
From yesterday, the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP) rate for employees using their own vehicles for business travel has increased from 45p per mile to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles driven within the tax year. This represents a significant 10p per mile increase, providing additional financial support for those who regularly use their personal vehicles for work purposes.
Importantly, this change has been backdated to April, meaning eligible individuals may be able to claim the increased rate retrospectively for qualifying business mileage already undertaken during the current tax year.
This updated rate applies specifically to cars and vans used for work-related travel and is intended to help offset the rising costs associated with vehicle use, including fuel, maintenance, and general running expenses.
The government has introduced this increase as part of wider measures aimed at supporting consumers and workers amid ongoing cost of living pressures and rising day-to-day expenses.
