What a place to have a meeting!

I’m very grateful to have a meeting room with the South Downs looking back at us through the windows... it’s nothing short of glorious. (It also has air con 🎉)

I’m loving the new sign for the meeting room as well. Thank you to Steve Wilson at Wilson Design for making it, and to Rich Nicklen for the design work.

If you don’t know Steve... you probably don’t live within 30 miles of Chichester and own a business 😅 He’s reached legendary status after 25 years of supporting local firms, and has now reached the final of the national awards recognising that work: https://www.sussexexpress.co.uk/your-world/chichester-businessman-reaches-national-awards-final-after-quarter-of-a-century-supporting-local-firms-8931556

Steve also made the sign for Becca’s Pins : my wife’s business. She’s a super-talented seamstress, covering alterations and repairs, clothing, curtains and soft furnishings. I’m very proud of her... and the sign looks fantastic.

Feeling very lucky to work from such a brilliant workspace... and grateful to the people who’ve helped make it ours.

HOAX!!?? Well… for the underprepared, it did feel a little like The Emperor’s New Clothes 😂

A partial solar eclipse where the Moon was going to cover about 92% of the Sun sounds pretty spectacular.

And if you had the proper eclipse glasses, you were sorted — you could safely look towards the Sun and actually watch it happening.

We, however, did not. 😂

So naturally, we all went outside to watch this amazing celestial event…
…and then proceeded to turn our backs on the Sun and stare into a cardboard box.

Obviously, there was a very good reason for this. Without the correct glasses, you absolutely shouldn't look directly at the Sun.

But there was something slightly ridiculous about going outside to witness an eclipse that we couldn't actually look at. 😂

So here is my wife… facing completely the wrong direction, watching a tiny projection of the eclipse with her head in a box.
The upside? I could take a photo of her without her knowing. 😂

Halfway through, things got even better.
We discovered there was another hole in the top of the box letting light in. Ironically, this produced a beautiful, perfectly circular image with what looked like a crescent shadow across it.
For a while, we thought we'd cracked it.
Except… it wasn't moving in line with the eclipse. 🤦‍♂️

Eventually, we went back inside and watched the real thing on TV. 😂

The safety advice was, of course, spot on. But next time I'm buying the glasses — if only so I can actually face the astronomical event I've gone outside to see.

Did you manage to see it properly, or were you also watching a tiny cardboard-box version of it? 👀

I met some awesome people last Thursday!

It's been a while since I've been to one of meet ups, but Olly Clarke always hosts a great event, this time with the aid of Natalie Cheesman.

The event was sold out, the venue was Wiston Estate and the energy was fantastic. So many interesting and lovely people to talk with.

Including but in no way limited to; Chris Arnold, Callum Hodgson, Mark Blick, Amalia Montague-Peters, Dasa as well as some familiar faces; Theresa Truscott, Karen Bashford and Nick...who I thought I was connected with 😅.

well...that escalated!

It’s a bit like business expenses. Things can get out of control real fast if you aren’t paying close attention...

One minute everything is ticking along nicely... and the next, unmonitored costs are flaring up all over the place.

I had a plan though. My plan was to keep the burgers moving and if needed get them off the grill for a bit... that little bit of foresight meant I didn't burn them.

It’s much easier to avoid disaster when you know how to deal with the heat.

If your expenses are starting to feel a bit too hot to handle... let's talk

If you're self-employed...

and you're signed up to MTD for ITSA then the first submission deadline is coming up on the 7th of August.

Probably worth getting it sent early if you can. That way if there are any problems submitting the data, or you're paperwork isn't as together as you thought then you don't have to fix it in a panic 😅

Much better to have it done and dusted now so you can enjoy the rest of the summer without it hanging over you.

Hope you're all having a good week...

It felt like a huge gamble...

This morning I headed out for a walk wearing a weighted vest. To anyone who didn't know what it was, it probably looked like I'd raided a military surplus store.

My wife gave me that look that said, "Are you sure that's a good idea?"

I wasn't sure what the villagers or dog walkers would think.

Turns out... nobody cared.

It reminded me how often we hold ourselves back because we're worried about other people's opinions.

Whether it's wearing a weighted vest, starting a business, putting yourself out there on LinkedIn, or asking for help with your bookkeeping, most people are far more focused on their own lives than ours.

The weighted vest helps me work towards my health goals.

Ignoring other people's opinions helps me work towards all my other goals.

What goal are you putting off because you're worried about what other people might think?

Spot the difference...These are the same plants.... 24 hours apart.

The only difference is a bit of water, and some care and attention 😬😅.

It’s a simple observation, but it’s a powerful one. One day they’re wilting and stressed, the next they’re standing tall and healthy.

Business works the same way.

The difference between being on top of your finances and feeling like you’re failing often just comes down to the support you have around you.

Having the right team in place is the 'water' that keeps the foundations steady. When the basics are looked after, you actually have the space to breathe and grow.

Success isn't always about grit and grind. Sometimes it’s just about having the right people making sure the 'watering' gets done.

If my jar of Lucy Bee coconut oil has decided to completely lose its composure, I don't see why I'm expected to maintain mine.

It’s supposed to be a solid. A sturdy, reliable pantry staple.

Instead, it’s just… liquid. A puddle of its former self.

I’m taking notes. If the coconut oil can just give up and melt into a puddle because the room is a bit warm, I think I’ve earned the right to do the exact same thing 😅

My laptop is currently having a mid-life crisis. It sounds like a Boeing 747 preparing for takeoff and it's acting like it's being asked to solve the mysteries of the universe in a sauna. ✈️💻

I've had to give it its own dedicated fan and elevate it on a tub just to keep it from taking off. Meanwhile, I'm doing okay 😀 or at least better than my MacBook..only one of us can have the fan 🫠

Who's suffering more in this heat: you or your computer? 👇
