It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day of running a business. Especially when juggling an already busy home life.

Deadlines, emails, cash flow, clients… before you know it, sometimes it can feel like you’re just ticking off the next job on the list.

It’s worth reminding yourself why you started in the first place.

🌞 More freedom?
🌞 To challenge yourself?

Often the first 2 that spring to mind.. but what about also…

🌞 Maybe it was to create a better future for your family.
🌞 To give you the flexibility YOUR life needs, not someone else.
🌞 Maybe you simply want to build something that was yours or all of the above?
🌞 Knowing your children are watching you try and succeed, and knowing that this too will impact their future by showing what a little bit of self belief and (lots of) hard work can achieve?

A personal one for me, as well as the above is to work alongside amazing business owners. My clients seriously inspire me every day 🤘😎 🫶

Whatever your reason, don’t let the day to day make you lose sight of it.

The numbers are important and they always will be, but they’re only part of the picture.

Running a business is hard and challenging in every way.
Late nights, weekends working, non-stop thinking about it at times, problems that arise that only you can fix and must fix, making sure everyone is happy and that you’re heading in the right direction.
Sometimes the 9-5 can feel appealing once again tbh…but only sometimes! ☺️

Remembering that I get to work with amazing people. Creating a business back in 2020 after years working for companies. Having a positive impact on local business owners whether starting out or growing. Building something to be proud of that works for my clients and my life is an indescribable kind of happiness.

A successful business isn’t just one that grows. It’s one that helps you build the life you wanted when you took that leap in the first place.

Keep your eye on the bigger picture 🌞

Are you watching your business profit and growth in the best way?

One of the biggest changes I see in successful business owners is when they stop focusing on turnover and worrying about lowering tax and start focusing on profit and growing!

It’s easy to get caught up chasing bigger sales and more customers, but growth doesn’t always mean more money in your pocket.
More work often brings more costs, and if you’re not watching your profit and just worrying about tax, you can end up both working harder for less and holding yourself back.

I also see a lot of businesses spending money purely to reduce their tax bill.
Good tax planning is important, but spending £1 to save 19p or 25p in tax rarely makes sense.
Profit isn’t the enemy. It gives you options, allowing you to invest in better systems, outsource where needed, employ when the numbers stack up and build a stronger business for the future 🥳

The businesses that grow well aren’t always the ones with the biggest turnover. They’re usually the ones that know their numbers and keep a close eye on their profit.

Starting a business is exciting… but choosing the right structure from the beginning can make a huge difference later on.

Should you stay as a sole trader? 🤔
Or would a limited company save you more tax and offer better protection? 🤔

The right setup depends on your income, goals and future plans.

If you’re thinking about starting a business and want to make sure you’re set up properly from day one, feel free to message me 📩

Ever get the feeling you’re being spied on? 🕵️‍♀️

HMRC has opened a consultation, ending on the 10th June 2026 on proposals that could require more detailed reporting of payments, loans and transactions between limited companies and directors/shareholders.

Bloody unfair right? 🤦🏼‍♀️ You take the risk, work long hours, carry the stress of running a business.
Now you face the possibility of even MORE monitoring, admin and scrutiny on how you access money from your own company.

🗓️ CONSULTATION WINDOW

The consultation runs from 19 March 2026 to 10 June 2026.

Business owners, accountants and advisers should respond before any rules are finalised.

If you feel this adds unnecessary red tape, now is the time to speak up! 🗣️

💬 WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS

Feedback from genuine business owners can influence proposals, delay changes, or force a rethink.

Silence usually benefits their decision making.

📌 GOOD ADVICE RIGHT NOW

Whatever happens, keep your Directors’ Loan Account tidy:

✔ Don’t mix personal and business spending
✔ Record withdrawals correctly at the time
✔ Review balances regularly
✔ Plan dividends properly before taking them
✔ Don’t wait until year end for surprises

A messy loan account already causes enough problems without extra HMRC attention.

💡 Small business owners need support and simplicity, not constant new layers of reporting.

📩 If you want your Directors’ Loan Account reviewed or cleaned up before year end, message me.

🐣 Happy Easter! 🌼

Wishing all of our clients and followers a lovely Easter break.Hopefully filled with good food, family time, and a well deserved rest 😌

Just a quick note to say I’ll be away from Monday to Thursday, enjoying a little break. I’ll pick up all messages as soon as I’m back.

I’ll be returning refreshed for the start of the new tax year, and will be getting straight into 2025/26 tax returns, so if you like to be organised and get ahead early, now’s a great time to start thinking about yours.

Enjoy the long weekend! 🐰✨

🤧 SSP is changing in April 2026 and a lot of small business owners won’t realise the impact until it hits payroll.

Payable from day 1.
More employees qualifying.
More cost per absence.

When you’re costing a new employee, it’s not just salary.

It is:

1. Salary
2. Employer NI
3. Pension
4. Holiday

And now higher sickness exposure.

If you’re planning to recruit in 2026, you need to run the numbers properly before offering a contract.

If you’d like help costing a new hire properly (and protecting your margins), message me.

Because employment costs are creeping up quietly 🤫 and profit disappears just as quietly if you don’t adjust.

Most clients don’t leave their accountant because of price.

They leave because of communication. It seems to be what I’m hearing all the time when we get new enquiries.

Not replying to emails.
Taking weeks to answer simple questions.
Making clients feel dumb for asking something they don’t understand.
Only speaking when a deadline is due, often causing panic, or worse, missed deadlines resulting in fines and penalties 🫨

Business owners don’t expect accountants to be on call 24/7.
You just want to feel heard, informed and not left guessing.

Silence creates anxiety.
And when you’re running a business, you already have enough of that.

Good communication isn’t “extra service”.
It’s the job. 📞 🤝

At Hi Altitude Accountancy, clear and prompt communication isn’t a bonus feature. It’s a basic standard.

If something’s urgent, you’ll hear back ✅
If something’s complicated, it’ll be explained properly ✅
If we’re waiting on something, you’ll know ✅

Numbers matter, but how your accountant makes you feel matters just as much 💘

We don’t believe in the bare minimum.
In relationships ❌
Or in business ❌

You deserve clarity, consistency and honesty, not silence and surprises.

A quick heads up as we head into deadline week. Clock is ticking! ⏰

This year the Self Assessment deadline falls on a Saturday, but unlike last year there will be no extended HMRC opening hours.

HMRC helplines are only open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday this week. They close at 6pm on Friday and won’t reopen until Monday, after the deadline has passed.

If you leave things until 31 January, the only support available will be via HMRC web chat, which can be slow.

If you need help, now is the time to act. Don’t leave it until deadline day.
