Liz Truss is the UK’s new Prime Minister after Tory members voted to elect her as the new leader of the Conservative Party having won 57% of the members’ vote, defeating rival Rishi Sunak.

She stated in her speech that: "I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply."

Truss had said she would hold an emergency budget in September, but that has subsequently been re-labelled as a fiscal event where she is expected to deliver some of her core commitments including cutting taxes, potentially cutting fuel duty as well as plans to support people with energy costs through the winter. However, delivering on her promises will be a challenge having to deal with the cost-of-living crisis, the energy sector crisis, supporting the Ukrainian war, a slowing economy heading into recession and an overall need to support businesses and individuals. As much as people would like to look to her or blame her, I am not sure she will have a huge amount of control over what is going on with some of these global macro events.

She will have to resort to borrowing to fund the policies which numerous economists believe could be inflationary. It seems currency markets are not convinced by this strategy as the pound is trading at its lowest level since March 2020. However, investment portfolios invested in overseas equities, and UK-listed companies that derive the bulk of their earnings overseas, will benefit from a continued sterling weakness which will enhance returns. The weaker pound could continue until the market builds confidence in the new Prime Minister.

We will have to wait and see what changes Liz Truss chooses to make once she has her feet under the desk…….

The acquisition is subject to approval by the FCA and is expected to complete later this year.
