Running a small business is busy enough without stressing over taxes, but a little planning now can save you a lot later. Here are some top tips:

1️⃣ Claim all your allowances - Every little bit counts. Don’t leave money on the table!
2️⃣ Pension contributions aren’t just boring paperwork - They can cut your tax bill and boost your future. Win-win!
3️⃣ Keep your records tidy - Good accounts = less stress = happier you.
4️⃣ Think about timing - Sometimes delaying or bringing forward spending can save tax. It’s like scheduling your receipts wisely.
5️⃣ Dividends & salaries matter - Small tweaks here and there can make a big difference for limited company directors.

Tax planning doesn’t have to be scary, it just needs a little thought and the right advice.

This week marks Neurodiversity Celebration Week. A time to recognise and celebrate the different ways our brains work.

Recently, Claire (our MD) shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD and possible autism just before Christmas. It didn’t change who she is.

It just explained a few things.

The hyperfocus.
The overthinking.
The ability to spot tiny details others might miss.
The brain that runs at 100mph (especially in January)

ADHD hasn’t held Claire back in accounting. In many ways, it’s her superpower.

That ability to lock into detail.
To question numbers others skim past.
To be incredibly thorough.
To think differently about problems.

Different doesn’t mean less capable. It means different strengths.

Running a business and leading a team isn’t about fitting into one mould. It’s about understanding how you work best and building around that.

If you’re navigating your own diagnosis, or supporting someone who is, you’re not alone. And there is real strength in thinking differently.

Think differently, lead differently. Read the full story here https://jennisonaccounting.co.uk/adhd-diagnosis-as-a-business-owner/

The end of the tax year is just around the corner.

Before 5 April, it’s worth checking if you’ve:

✔️ Used your ISA allowance
✔️ Maximised pension contributions
✔️ Used your Capital Gains Tax allowance
✔️ Reviewed dividends and salary planning
✔️ Checked for any tax-efficient opportunities

A little planning before the year closes can make a big difference.

If you’re unsure whether you’ve made the most of your allowances, now is the time to review, not after the deadline has passed. Drop us a message if you need some support checking everything.

What Can You Really Claim as a Business Expense?

We know the temptation is real… that morning coffee, a research trip, even a new kitchen for team meetings.

But HMRC is pretty clear, for something to count as a business expense, it usually has to be:
✔️ Wholly for business
✔️ Exclusively for business
✔️ Necessary for your work

Anything that’s partly personal usually won’t fly. Sorry, the biscuits in the office snack cupboard don’t count (even if you love them).

Some common legitimate expenses:

- Software subscriptions
- Travel costs
- Equipment and tools
- Professional fees

💡 Tip: Keep receipts, track everything, and when in doubt, check with your accountant. A little clarity now can save a lot of stress at tax time!
