There's so many new faces here so I wanted to give a quick review on services I offer for business owners and their accounts.

I mainly support business owners with:

• Bookkeeping – keeping your accounts organised, up to date, and accurate
• Payroll – making sure everything runs smoothly and is done properly
• Finance Director support – helping you understand your numbers and make better decisions in your business

Most of the people I work with don’t need anything complicated… they just want to know everything is being handled properly so they can focus on running their business.

If that sounds like you, comment the word ACCOUNTS to find out more details on how I can support ☺️

Small business owners, this one's for you ☺️

Tax allowances you might want to make the most of this year 👇

A lot of people miss out on these simply because they don’t know what’s available to them…

Here are a few key ones to be aware of:
• ISA allowance – tax-free savings and investments up to your annual limit
• Lifetime ISA – useful for first-time buyers or long-term saving, with a government bonus
• Personal allowance – the amount you can earn before paying income tax
• Marriage allowance – you may be able to transfer part of your allowance to your partner
• Dividend allowance – relevant if you’re taking dividends from a limited company
• Trading allowance – small amounts of self-employed income can be tax-free
• Pension contributions – tax-efficient way to save for the future
• Capital gains allowance – when selling assets, part of your gain may be tax-free

These can make a big difference when used properly, especially if you’re self-employed or running a limited company.

If you’re not sure which ones apply to you or how to use them properly, I've space for 2 new clients at the moment - DM me the word TAX to have a free consultation call.

“Making Tax Digital means I’ll pay more tax"

This is one of the biggest misconceptions I’m hearing at the moment, and it’s absolutely not true.

Making Tax Digital for income tax does not mean:
👉🏻You’ll pay more tax
👉🏻You’ll be charged extra
👉🏻You’ll suddenly have more payments to make

So what actually changes?
It’s how often you report, not how much you pay.

Instead of one annual submission, you’ll be:
👉🏻Sending quarterly updates
👉🏻Keeping digital records

Why this can actually help you

For a lot of business owners, this will make things easier over time:
👉🏻You stay closer to your numbers
👉🏻You spot issues earlier
👉🏻You avoid that last-minute panic
👉🏻You can plan ahead for your tax bill

Most of the stress around this comes from not understanding it yet, not from the changes themselves.

Once you’ve got a simple system in place, it becomes much more manageable.

If you want help getting set up or just want it explained properly, message me TAX and we can have a chat - I'm Tracey, a fully qualified chartered account with over 20 years' experience 👍

The one thing most people get wrong when running a business.

Saving for tax.

And more importantly, not saving enough.

This is probably the most common thing I see when new clients come to me.
They either aren’t saving at all, or they’re guessing a number and hoping it’s right.

The key thing to understand is this:

👉 You’re taxed on your profit, not the money coming in.

So for example:

You bring in £5,000
You spend £2,000 on expenses
That leaves £3,000 profit

That £3,000 is what you’re taxed on, not the full £5,000.

As a simple starting point, I’d usually suggest putting aside around 20%, which in this case would be £600.

It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does need to be consistent.

If you’re not sure how much you should be saving each month, or you’ve been guessing up until now, feel free to message me ACCOUNTS and I’ll help you get it properly set up 👍

Making Tax Digital is here… so what are your options?

If you’re self-employed or running a small business, it’s worth understanding how you can handle this going forward 👇

✨ Option 1 – Manage it yourself

You’ll need MTD-compatible software (like Xero or QuickBooks) and you’ll be responsible for:

Keeping your bookkeeping up to date
Reconciling your bank
Managing receipts
Submitting your quarterly updates on time

This can work well if you’re organised and consistent, but the deadlines are strict and it does require time.

✨ Option 2 – Your accountant manages it

You stay self-employed, but your accountant will:

Maintain your digital records
Keep everything up to date
Submit your quarterly updates
Handle your final year-end position

This takes the pressure off and reduces the risk of missing deadlines or getting things wrong.

✨ Option 3 – Consider incorporating

Some business owners are reviewing whether becoming a limited company makes more sense.

Under the current rollout, limited companies will continue with annual corporation tax filings, rather than quarterly MTD submissions for self-employed income.

It’s not right for everyone, but for some growing businesses, it’s worth exploring.

✨ The key thing to know

April 2026 wasn’t just a filing change, it was a shift in how your business records are managed.

The earlier you review your position, the easier this will feel.

If you’re not sure which option is right for you, just message me the word FINANCE - I'm a fully qualified chartered accountant with countless years of experience and currently accepting a handful of new clients in May!

Making Tax Digital started from 6th April - are you ready?

If you’re self-employed or a landlord, this is something you do need to be aware of 👇

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
It means you’ll need to:

Keep digital records
Submit your income, expenses and profit quarterly
instead of just doing one tax return at the end of the year

Who does it affect?

Sole traders and landlords
With turnover over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year

What’s changing?

You’ll need to send quarterly updates to HMRC
This must be done through digital accounting software
Paper records or basic spreadsheets on their own won’t be enough

Why does it matter?
It’s easy to see this as “more admin”…

But actually, it gives you a chance to:

Stay on top of your numbers
Understand your business performance
Plan ahead for your tax bill

How do you prepare?

Start using software like Xero or Sage
Make sure you’re registered for MTD if it applies to you
Get support early so you’re not rushing later on

If you’re not sure whether this affects you or what you need to do next, message me MTD and I’ll get back to you 👍

All the industries I work with as a chartered accountant with my own business -

setting up just over 12 months ago, I’ve worked with 30+ business owners, including:

👉🏻 Beauty and hair businesses
👉🏻 Tradespeople (including CIS workers)
👉🏻 Equestrian businesses and farmers
👉🏻 Retail businesses
👉🏻 Cafés and hospitality businesses
👉🏻 Property companies
👉🏻 Social media and online business owners

The reality is, no two businesses are the same, but a lot of the challenges around accounts are very similar.

Most people just want to know things are being done properly, without it taking up all their time and energy!

If you’re self-employed or running a business and you’re not sure where you stand with your accounts, comment the word FINANCE, and I’ll get in touch!

11 things - are they business expenses? 👇

It’s not always as straightforward as yes or no, but here’s a simple breakdown:

👉🏻Garden office
The structure itself usually isn’t allowable, but some integral features may be.

👉🏻House moving costs
Not usually allowable unless very specific HMRC criteria are met.

👉🏻 Hair & makeup for a photoshoot
If it’s specifically for a brand photoshoot, this can be claimed.

👉🏻 Gift vouchers
If you’re a limited company, you can claim up to 6 x £50 per year as trivial benefits.

👉🏻 Mobile phone
Your monthly bill and the cost of the phone can be allowable.

👉🏻 Car
In many cases, claiming mileage is more tax efficient than having a company car.

👉🏻 Coaching / training
Business coaching and training for you or your team is allowable.

👉🏻 Lunch
Generally not allowable unless you’re travelling for work or attending training.

👉🏻Team costs
Employees, VAs, subcontractors, associates are all allowable.

👉🏻 Childcare
Unfortunately not an allowable business expense.

👉🏻 Stationery & office supplies
Pens, notebooks, printer ink, paper, etc. are all allowable.

A lot of this comes down to the detail and how it applies to your specific situation.

If you’ve ever been unsure what you can and can’t claim, message me the word FINANCE to arrange a free discovery call

A few bits of financial advice I’ve been giving clients recently 👇

These are the things that come up again and again with small business owners:

• Putting aside around 20% for tax (if you’re not VAT registered) is usually a good starting point to cover your bill

• Set up a monthly payment to yourself so you’re not just taking money randomly when you need it

• Keep an eye on your turnover each month, especially with VAT being a rolling 12-month threshold

• Build up some reserves in your business account for quieter months or unexpected dips

• Choosing between sole trader or limited company isn’t one-size-fits-all, it depends on your situation

• If you work from home, make sure you’re claiming use of home as an expense

• It’s always worth claiming your mileage, even if it feels like small amounts

• Don’t rush into buying a company car without checking the tax impact first, it can be more expensive than people think

• If you’re able to pay yourself a consistent amount each month, you’re doing better than you probably give yourself credit for

A lot of this isn’t complicated, it’s just knowing what to do and staying consistent with it.

If you ever want a bit of clarity around your own situation, please comment the word FINANCE and I'll get in touch!
