With the Autumn Budget coming up, it’s a good moment to think about what you want your money to make possible 💚

Perhaps it’s more time with family, the freedom to step back from work, or helping your children find their feet. You might still be figuring that out, and that’s okay too.

These are the things we talk about every day at Oakmere. They’re what give your financial plan a purpose.

When the announcements arrive, we’ll help you understand what’s relevant to you and how it fits with the life you’re planning for.

In the meantime, if there’s something on your mind, you don’t need to wait until Budget day to have a conversation. We’re here to listen, answer your questions and talk things through.

You’ll find a link to speak to our team in the comments 💬

Most parents aren't unsure about whether to help their children. They're unsure how much they can give without putting themselves at risk.

That question usually gets answered by instinct. A figure that feels about right. Or whatever happens to be sitting in an account that isn't doing much.

A more useful starting point is your own plan. What your future lifestyle actually costs. How your retirement holds up if markets, health or longevity don't behave as expected. What the remaining plan looks like once that money has gone.

Once those numbers have been stress tested, the conversation changes shape. Generosity becomes a decision made from clarity rather than one you hope will work out.

Timing matters as much as the amount. Support doesn't have to be a single large transfer. It can be phased, tied to specific milestones, or structured so it arrives when it will do the most good which tends to protect both sides.

Helping your children shouldn't come with a quiet worry running underneath it. When your own position is clearly modelled, it usually doesn't.

There are two ways to support your children financially. One of them is visible. The other one isn't.

The visible one is the transfer - the deposit, the fees, the sum that moves from your account to theirs. It's the part that gets planned for and talked about.

The second is quieter. It's the years in which they aren't required to step in for you. No contributions towards your costs, no decisions made around your situation, no reorganising their own finances to absorb yours.

That second form of support only holds if your plan can take the weight of the first. Which is why the useful work happens before any money moves: understanding what your own future actually costs, how resilient the plan is if health or longevity don't go as expected, and what's left once a significant gift has gone out of it.

Done in that order, help given now doesn't quietly create a cost later.

Most business owners can tell you their turnover. Far fewer can say, without pausing, what it's all for.

That pause isn't a failing. It's what happens when a business is working. The hours go in, profits get reinvested, the team grows, the numbers move in the right direction and the question of where it's ultimately heading quietly slips down the list.

Growth becomes a habit long before anyone decides it should be the goal.

The useful question isn't whether the business is doing well. It's what role it's meant to play in your life. Long-term income? An eventual sale? Something to hand on? Or simply more freedom over how you spend your time?

Those four answers point in genuinely different directions. They change how much you draw versus reinvest, how you structure ownership, when you bring people in above you, and what "ready" looks like if you ever decide to step back.

Without that clarity, it's easy to keep pushing forward without ever checking whether the direction still suits you.

Planning for business owners isn't only about extracting value efficiently. It's about lining up the trajectory of the business with what you actually want from the years ahead and being willing to change one when the other moves.

When the destination gets clearer, decisions about investment, expansion and succession stop feeling reactive. They start feeling deliberate.

Plenty of people carry on working long after the point they needed to. Not out of caution,
and not because the numbers told them to. Usually because nobody has ever tested the
question properly.

"How will I know when it's enough?" is one of the most important things a client can ask.

It's also one of the most quietly asked.

Part of the reason it's hard to answer is that enough isn't really a figure. It's the relationship between your resources and your lifestyle, between what you've built and how you want to live. Two people with similar wealth can arrive at very different answers.

Fixing on a single milestone doesn't settle it either. Until you know how that figure translates into income, flexibility and resilience, it can still feel uncertain.

Clarity comes from modelling real life rather than rough assumptions.

What does your spending look like on reduced hours? How would market movements affect you in the early years? What if you live longer than you expected, or your priorities change along the way?

Explored properly, those scenarios won't remove every unknown. What they do is replace
vague hope with informed confidence.

And that changes the nature of the decision. Stepping back becomes a choice made from
strength, rather than a leap into the dark.

"How will I know when it's enough?"

It's one of the most important questions we get asked, and almost always one of the quietest.

Part of what makes it hard to answer is that a figure on its own tells you very little. Enough isn't a line you cross. It's the relationship between what you've built and how you want to live and if either side of that shifts, so does the answer.

Which is why reaching a target can still leave someone uneasy. The number arrives, but it hasn't been translated into income, flexibility and resilience, so the reassurance never quite lands. Others keep working longer than they need to, simply because the question has never been tested properly.

Testing it means modelling real life rather than leaning on rough assumptions. What would your spending look like if you reduced your hours? How would market falls in the early years affect you? What if you live longer than you expect, or what you want from those years changes along the way?

Working through those scenarios won't remove every unknown. It does replace vague hope with something you can actually plan around.

And once the picture is clear, stepping back stops being a leap into the dark. It becomes a decision made from a position of strength.

Being a Certified B Corporation is not just a badge we hold. It’s a commitment reflected in how we continue to operate.

For Oakmere, that means considering the impact of our decisions on our clients, our team, our communities and the wider world. It means holding ourselves accountable to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and responsible business.

We were proud to be one of the first St. James’s Place firms in the UK to achieve B Corp Certification, but what matters most is continuing to put those principles into practice.

Because true wealth is about more than financial success. It’s about creating a positive, meaningful legacy for the people and places around us.

Purpose isn’t separate from the way we do business. It’s part of the Oakmere Way.

Planning your next chapter starts with a much bigger question than ‘Can I afford to stop working?’

It starts with understanding what you’re moving towards.

Perhaps you want to slow down gradually, spend more time with your family or finally pursue something that work has never left much room for.

And then there’s the personal side. When your career has shaped your routine and identity for decades, stepping back can feel like a much bigger change than expected.

The numbers matter, of course. But they need to support a clear picture of the life you want next.

Because the best next chapters aren’t drifted into. They’re planned for with purpose.

For many business owners, an exit is one of the biggest financial decisions they will ever make. But the most important question isn’t always, “What is my business worth?”

It’s, “What do I want my life to look like next?”

Perhaps it means more time with family, the freedom to pursue something new, or the confidence to step away knowing that what you’ve built has a future.

That clarity gives the numbers purpose. It helps shape when you might exit, what you need from the business and how your personal financial plan can support the life you want beyond it.

At Oakmere, we begin by listening. Then we help you build a considered plan around your ambitions, your values and your idea of true wealth.

Because a successful exit isn’t simply about leaving a business. It’s about moving confidently towards what comes next.

This is the Oakmere Way.

Your business may be your biggest asset. But is it ready to support your life after you leave it?

After years spent building the revenue, reputation and team, it’s understandable that planning your exit can remain something to think about ‘later’.

Until later starts to feel much closer.

A successful exit won’t mean the same thing to every business owner. It could be a full sale, a gradual transition, a management buyout or passing the business on to family.

Before focusing on valuations, it’s worth getting clear on what you want the exit to make possible - and how much your future depends on everything going to plan.
The earlier you connect the value you’ve built with the life you want afterwards, the more time you have to consider your options.
