The clocks went back today, although several appliances may refuse to accept this until March ⏰

If you have an extra hour, use just 20 minutes for a small financial reset. Check the rate on one savings account, update one goal, add an important date to your calendar or book a conversation you have been postponing.

Small jobs are easier to complete than a dramatic “sort out all my finances” afternoon.

Then enjoy the other 40 minutes however you like.

Half term is nearly here, bringing days out, snack requests and the occasional gift-shop negotiation 😅

For families following East Riding's recommended term dates, the autumn break runs from 26 to 30 October.

One easy approach is a family “yes budget”: choose one paid highlight, add a couple of free activities, pack snacks where practical and agree the spending limit before leaving home.

The idea is not to remove spontaneity. It is to know what you can comfortably say yes to without worrying about the total later.

December has a habit of arriving with more receipts than expected🎄👀

An early festive-spending plan does not need to cancel the fun. It simply gives presents, food, travel, parties and all the “little extras” somewhere to fit.

Choose a total you can comfortably manage, divide it between the things that matter most and talk to family early if spending expectations need to change.

The goal is not a perfect Christmas. It is enjoying December without giving January all the consequences.

Scammers often create pressure because they do not want you to stop and think.

Do not click the link or call the number in the message. Instead, contact the organisation through its official app, website or the number printed on your card. A genuine bank will not ask you to move money to a “safe account”.

Suspicious text messages can usually be forwarded to 7726 free of charge.

Pause. Check independently. Then decide.

If you became self-employed, started receiving untaxed income or otherwise need to complete a Self Assessment return for 2025/26, this deadline may apply to you ⏰

HMRC says you must tell them by 5 October 2026 if you need to file and either:
• you have not sent a tax return before, or
• you were registered previously but did not need to send a return for 2024/25.

If you are unsure, use the official GOV.UK checker. Registering is separate from submitting and paying, but leaving it late can create avoidable pressure while you wait for your Unique Taxpayer Reference.

A new energy price cap period begins on 1 October⚡

The important point is that the cap does not limit a household's total bill. It limits the unit rates and standing charges that can be applied to certain tariffs. Your actual cost still depends on usage, region, meter type and payment method.

Before October begins, it may be useful to:
• submit an up-to-date meter reading if you do not have a smart meter
• check the unit rates and standing charges on your tariff
• compare your Direct Debit with your recent usage and account balance
• contact your supplier early if you are worried about paying

A few minutes of admin can make the next bill easier to understand.
