Attention troops!

Confirmation that approved HMRC mileage & fuels rates have increased for the 2026/27 tax year.

If you reimburse your employees or charge mileage to clients at HMRC approved rates, then these rates need to be increased accordingly.

If you reclaim any shortfall in mileage reimbursed by your employer, then this figure will increase in your 2026/27 tax return filed next year (unless your employer increases their reimbursement rate).

Afternoon troops!

Just a heads up that some of us are away on outdoor maneuvers next week so our office will not be fully operational.

Lieutenant Annabelle Ash will be at the helm and dealing with anything urgent, but all general enquiries will be dealt with on our return to base camp on Monday 1st June.

Payroll services will be unaffected.

Attention All Payrollers!

Just a reminder that you should confirm your entitlement to the Employers National Insurance Allowance before running your first payroll of the year. Many software's will provide you with a prompt to do this.

For QBO Advanced Payroll, go to your HMRC settings and check the box to confirm if you are claiming the Employers NI Allowance. You will also see an option to include the Employers NI Allowance in your payroll journals - make sure you have that checked on 'YES'.
You should then go to your reports and submit an EPS to confirm your status with HMRC. Uncheck the box stating that the month is a non-payment period.

Please also be aware of the increases to Minimum Wage Rates. It may be that you need to recalculate staff salaries to ensure they are being paid at/above the uplifted rates for the new tax year.

Attention all payrollers!

Just a reminder that as you prepare your final payroll of the tax year, you will also be making your final submission to HMRC, closing the tax year. If you are using payroll software (other than HMRC’s Basic Tools), this should be automated by the software. For Basic Tools, you must confirm and submit your final submission separately.

You will need to issue all current employees their P60 for the tax year. A P60 is a form that confirms how much has been earned over the tax year and how National Insurance contributions and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) income tax has been paid by the individual.
P60’s must be issued before 31st May.

You should be able to process P60’s on payroll software immediately after submitting your final payroll for the tax year. HMRC’s Basic Tools will not produce P60’s until after 6th April.

Opening the New Tax Year

You must confirm your entitlement to the Employers National Insurance Allowance by submitting an EPS BEFORE you run your first payroll of the new tax year.

You should also check that all employee tax codes have been updated for the new tax year before running your first payroll.
Most software will be connected to HMRC via your Government Gateway credentials, and so should update automatically, but it is worthwhile checking that these are correct. If using HMRC’s Basic Tools, you will need to update tax codes manually.

Finally, you should also review your staff rates of pay to ensure that new minimum wage thresholds are being met.
