“I’m too busy to look at my accounts right now…”

We hear this a lot.

And to be fair, when you’re running a business, it’s easy for the numbers to drop down the priority list.

But usually, the longer they’re left, the more time and money it takes to fix later. Things get missed and decisions get delayed. Then suddenly it’s a much bigger job than it needed to be.

Staying on top of things doesn’t have to be time-consuming, it just needs to be consistent.

A bit of time now saves a lot of hassle later.

Have you checked in on your numbers recently, or is it on the “I’ll get to it” list? 🤔

One of the most overlooked ways to reward your team isn’t the perk, it’s how it’s taxed!!

Most people assume that if you give employees a benefit, it has to be treated as a Benefit in Kind.

But that’s not always the only option.

A PAYE Settlement Agreement (PSA) allows the employer to cover the tax and National Insurance on certain benefits, rather than passing that cost on to employees.

It’s often used for smaller perks or one-off gestures where you don’t want anyone facing an unexpected tax bill later on.

The difference is simple but valuable!

Your team enjoys the benefit, and everything is taken care of by the business.

The part that often gets missed is timing.

PSAs need to be agreed with HMRC in advance, so if you leave it too late, the opportunity can easily pass.
If you’re planning to reward your team this year, it’s worth thinking about it early.

Could a PSA be the better way to do it?

The best time to get organised was April but the second best is now!

Every year starts with good intentions

“This year I’ll stay on top of things”
“I won’t leave it until the last minute”

And then business gets busy and it slips. Before you know it, you’re back in the same cycle

Getting organised doesn’t mean doing everything at once. It’s usually just a few small changes like better systems, clearer processes, and keeping things ticking over as you go.

The earlier you start, the easier it is and the less stressful January becomes.

It’s not just the reporting that’s changed…

It’s the penalties too!!

With MTD for Income Tax now in place from April 2026, there’s a new penalty system to be aware of.

Late submissions now work on a points-based system.

Miss a deadline, get a point
Reach the threshold, and a £200 penalty is triggered
Miss more deadlines after that, and further penalties can follow

The points don’t reset straight away either. You need a period of good compliance to clear them.

There are also separate penalties for late payment, including interest and additional charges.

And this is the bit that often gets overlooked…

Your payments on account still apply, and if those are late, they will now fall into the same late payment rules.

So it’s not just about submitting updates on time, it’s about keeping on top of everything.

The system is designed to reward consistency, but only if you’re set up properly from the start.

Do you feel clear on the new rules, or is it still a bit confusing?
