The new Employment Rights Act has made some significant changes affecting employers.
For example, employees now have unfair dismissal rights after six months, rather than two years.
It’s important to make sure you have reviews in place during an employee’s first six months.
Entitlements from the first day of employment include paternity leave, unpaid parental leave, and protection from harassment.
In response, some businesses are now choosing retained services or freelance support as an alternative to recruiting new people.

Meeting other business owners is a good way to review your ideas and learn from others.
If you don’t enjoy regular networking meetings (not everyone does) you can try online get togethers or business events and exhibitions.
Alternatively, you could team up with other businesses to raise funds for charity, for example.

Selling online is becoming more expensive and complex.
Since January this year many major social media platforms have increased their fees. In fact, if you sell through digital channels, high volumes won’t always mean good profits anymore.
Also, more people use AI tools like Siri, Gemini, or Alexa to find what they want. Your website must provide the right information in the right format for AI-assisted searches, or your visitor numbers will fall.
Check the sales fees for your digital channels to confirm they’re still profitable. If margins are tight, you may want to focus on search engine optimisation for your website instead.

Did you know that the Spring Bank Holiday takes place to mark Whit Sunday?
Traditionally that’s seven Sundays after Easter.
However, since 1971, we have a holiday on the last Monday of May instead.
Enjoy the Bank Holiday everyone.

🚗 Mileage rate increase from April 2026

HMRC has increased the flat rate mileage allowance for cars and vans from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 qualifying business miles.

This applies from 6 April 2026 and covers:

✅ Employees using their own car or van for business journeys
✅ Mileage allowance relief claims
✅ Self-employed mileage claims using HMRC’s flat rate method

The rate for business miles over 10,000 remains unchanged at 25p per mile.

Remember, this only applies to qualifying business journeys, not ordinary commuting, and you should keep clear mileage records to support any claims.

If you reimburse staff for business mileage, it may be worth reviewing your payroll and expenses process.

A garden office is an appealing idea for many business owners as an alternative to buying or renting space.
If your team works remotely, it might make good financial sense too. However, there are some things to think about.
Find out how you can use your business’s capital allowance and what is and isn’t tax deductible in our blog:
