A quiet but important change has now happened for limited companies.
HMRC’s free online service for filing company accounts and Corporation Tax returns closed on 31 March 2026.

From 1 April 2026, companies need to use commercial software to file their accounts and Company Tax Returns with HMRC.

For many small company owners who have historically dealt with this themselves, this is another step away from “simple online filing” and towards more structured digital compliance.

That is where good accountancy support becomes increasingly valuable.

The issue is not just buying software. It is making sure that:

* the accounts are prepared correctly
* the Corporation Tax return matches the accounts
* iXBRL tagging is dealt with properly
* claims, allowances and disclosures are not missed
