Black-headed gull on final approach

The Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), while mainly migratory seems to be an all-year-round bird in much of the UK. Getting its name from its dark brown head during the months of March to July but this fades to just twwo small patches behind the eyes during July to February. Here a small colony breeds on the lake at Rufford Abbey in North Nottinghamshire and on a very frosty November morning it was quite bright to show it in its finest winter suit.

1950s Beach Photography

Not seen today but in the 1940s through to the 1970s in any seaside town, beach photographers would patrol the promenades and encourage people to allow their photograph to be taken. For a nominal sum, maybe 5 shillings (25p in today's money) you got, by the end of the day, a 4x6inch print from a professional photographer's studio. The inducement was that you would be so enamoured with the shot, you would want more copies or bigger copies and this was where they really made their money. They had to, of course, because not everyone went to collect their original print. Oh, and this couple? This became my mum and dad. He was home on leave from the army and this was on a trip to Sgegness, the nearest seaside town to Nottingham with mum's parents for late summer bank holiday before they got married at the end of March. But it was only as I was editing the image that I realised the bright patch at bottom left was text advertising the Butlins holiday camp photography service. This holiday camp waswhere most of Nottingham went during the summer.

Cassius and slave

In the 1966, Cassius Clay, known later as Muhammad Ali, fought the British boxing champion, Henry Cooper for the 2nd time in 3 years, winning both times on technical knowouts. So it was that when a new kitten came into the family, the children were asked what to call it. 'Enery? No. It had to be Cassius but just like his namesake, Cassius the cat beame a bruser and had 8 year old Dawn at his beck-and-call and it obviously called for a portait on the street outside the front door of their Nottingham home.

A family visit

In the early part of the 1960s a family of 5 travels from their home in Nottingham to see the father's dad and aunt in Liverpool. Unlike the 21st century when most have a car or fly to Europe for the weekend, such visits were only ever once a year in a hired car and the trip used to take 5 or 6 hours since there were no motorways back then. The grandfather had been a farm labourer from the age of 12, working on Lord Sefton's estate with the heavy shire horses and the Aintree racecourse just down the road. But, despite the infrequent visits and the distance, oh and no telephones, the children loved seeing their grandfather.

Dereliction in Chesterfield

The Walton Works on the banks of the River Hipper, in the Brampton area of Chesterfield originally began as a candlewick and tape mill constructed in the 1770s for messrs Hewitt, Bunting & Co and by the mid-1800s the mill complex had expanded to include the spinning and doubling of Persian sewing thread.
By 1896 the site had been purchased by Robinsons who used the buildings for production of lint and subsequently for antiseptic dressings, cardboard cartons and cotton wool up until 2002 when they moved all production to newer premises nearby.

Growing upas a child of a farm labourer in Liverpool in 1930 was tough. Ted Houghton became my father-in-law but, aged 4 outside his house in Liverpool, 1930 there was nothing to say that he would only just avoid getting posted to the Far East at the end of the 2nd World War (he was still doing his basic training when the atom bombs were dropped), nor that he would marry just 6 months after getting engaged to a girl just 3 days after meeting her at Butlins Holiday Camp at Filey in North Yorkshire. Nor that he would end up a bus driver for Nottingham City Transport and have 3 children and be married for 52 years

A bicycle going nowhere

After two days of cloud, a three hour period showed up in the weather forecast with sunshine, not quite in the golden hour but heading that way. Knowing your local "patch" is a definate advantage. I had seen this old bike, chained up to the nearby telephone pole and planted up with "bedding" and "rockery" plants and I just wanted an opportunity to stop by. This three hour window was just what I was looking for. So, after getting other shots from locations I had an eye on, the bike was my final stop of the evening. I do like the creativity of people and it does add something to the whole area.

A very incongruous shop in the middle of England. Not even in the middle of the town and in an ordinary terrace house is "The Ski Shop" in Matlock, a town in the heart of the Derbyshire Dales and a place that doesn't get much snow anyway. Maybe they are hoping for a change in the waether.

Belton House is a Grade I listed country house near Grantham in Lincolnshire, England, built between 1685 and 1687 by Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet.
