Entertaining expenses cover the costs of hosting staff events and business related gatherings. Staff entertainment — such as team meals, seasonal celebrations and annual events within HMRC’s limits — is usually allowable. Client entertainment, however, isn’t tax deductible, even if it’s business related. Everyday meals aren’t claimable, but reasonable meal costs during business meetings or approved staff events are fine. Keep receipts and make sure the purpose is clearly business related.

Clothing expenses can only be claimed where the items are strictly for business purposes — such as branded uniforms, protective gear (PPE), safety boots, or specialist workwear required for the job. Everyday clothing, even if worn for work, can’t be claimed. PPE is fully allowable where required for health & safety, and uniform or branded items are acceptable as long as they can’t be worn as normal day‑to‑day clothing

When you work from home for your business, you can claim a portion of your household costs as an expense. This can include heating, electricity, rent or mortgage interest, council tax, broadband, and home insurance — based on the space and time you use for work. HMRC also allows a simple flat‑rate option if you prefer not to calculate actual costs. As long as the space is used wholly and exclusively for business during working time, you can claim your fair share and reduce your tax bill while keeping your records tidy.

Travel & mileage covers the costs of journeys made wholly and exclusively for business, helping you claim back tax-deductible expenses. This includes business trips to clients, supplier visits, events, training days, and travel between different work locations. You can claim mileage for using your personal car at HMRC’s approved rates (which is currently 45 pence per mile up to 10,000 miles and 25 pence over 10,000 miles), plus actual costs for public transport, parking, tolls and congestion charges. What you can’t claim are everyday commuting costs or any journeys with a personal element — only genuine business travel. Keeping clear logs of mileage, dates, destinations and receipts ensures you maximise your claim while staying fully compliant.

Landlords - are you ready for making tax digital (MTD)?
MTD applies to individual landlords (not limited companies).
Thresholds are based on gross rental and/or self‑employment income before expenses.
Start dates by income level:
£50,000+ → April 2026
£30,000+ → April 2027
£20,000+ → April 2028
It is particularly relevant for:
Individual landlords above the threshold
Landlords with multiple properties
Self‑employed people with rental income
If you receive rental income, PM us now to arrange a "free MTD for landlords checkup"
