💸 Are you leaving money on the table? Let’s talk about allowable business expenses.

As small business owners, freelancers, and founders, we love seeing our revenue grow. But there is a second half to that equation that is just as critical, protecting your taxable profit.

One of the most common mistakes I see entrepreneurs make is failing to track, claim, or correctly categorise allowable business expenses. For an expense to be deductible, it generally must be incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of running your trade.

🔍 Some of the expenses you can claim are technology & software, pension, salary, startup cost, marketing & advertising, travel & transport, telephone and equipment.

🛑 Be careful with the grey areas. Everyday business wear (like a sharp suit for a presentation) is not an allowable expense, whereas branded uniforms or protective gear are.

What is one business expense you realised you could claim that surprised you?

🎙️ Your voice is an asset, not a vanity metric

In a digital world obsessed with algorithms, it’s easy to fall into the numbers trap. We look at likes, views, and followers count as the ultimate measure of success. The truth is your professional voice is a strategic asset, not a vanity metric.

When you share your insights, your challenges, and your unique perspective on LinkedIn or any other platform, you are not just creating content, you are building equity.

Here is why your voice matters far more than the data points:

🎙️It builds trust, not just impressions: A viral post might get eyes, but consistent, authentic insights build credibility. People do business with people they trust, not just people they see.

🎙️It attracts the right opportunities: When you speak clearly about your expertise and values, you act as a beacon for the right clients, partners, and talent who align with your vision.

🎙️It solves problems: Your obvious might be someone else's aha! moment. Sharing how you navigate industry shifts helps others grow.

📈 From metrics to meaning

If you are hesitating to post because you are worried about the engagement numbers, try shifting your perspective. Don't ask, How many people will like this? Instead, ask, Who will this help?

One meaningful message in the inbox of a dream client or peer is worth more than 10,000 superficial views. Stop measuring your worth by the algorithm's mood swings. Your perspective is valuable, speak up, share your story, and own your space.

What’s an insight or lesson you’ve shared recently that resonated deeper than the numbers? Let's connect in the comments! 👇

Most people think founders win because of vision, grit, or hustle, these matter but there is a quieter skill that often makes the difference, emotional range. This is the ability to:

🔥 Stay calm when things are breaking

🔥 Stay ambitious when things are stable

🔥 Deliver hard truths without burning trust

🔥 Absorb pressure without passing it downstream

🔥 Shift between operator, seller and leader sometimes in the same hour

Early stage companies’ founders sometimes fail because the emotional load becomes inconsistent:

🔥 Overreacting to small problems

🔥 Underreacting to real risks

🔥 Letting stress distort decision making

Your team does not just execute your strategy, they mirror your emotional state. If you are volatile, they hesitate, if you are grounded, they move.

Most founders and business owners struggle because they are trying to grow a business while juggling VAT, PAYE, bookkeeping, HMRC deadlines, invoices, payroll, and cash flow, all on top of actually delivering the work. That pressure is not a sign you are failing, it’s a sign you are doing too much alone.

Your business can grow faster, cleaner with far less stress when your finance function is built properly. When your numbers are organised, three things happen instantly:

✨Clarity replaces panic — you know what’s due, when, and how it affects cash flow

✨Decisions get sharper — pricing, hiring, investment, and planning become strategic

✨Growth feels lighter — because you are not carrying the mental load of, I hope HMRC does not contact me today

You do not need to become an accountant to run a successful business. You just need a system that works, and support that keeps you in control. Focus on delivering client work and seek the help you need to get your business growing.

Founders thrive when they have:

✨Clean books

✨Predictable tax planning

✨Clear cash flow visibility

✨Monthly insights, not yearly surprises

✨A finance partner who translates numbers into decisions

Growth should not feel chaotic, it should feel intentional, supported, and financially confident. As your accountant, we help you build your business without stressing about accounting and tax.

From April 2028, Companies House will introduce new requirements for filing company accounts. Small companies and micro entities will be required to file their profit and loss accounts, with the option to withhold publication if they choose.

In addition, all companies will need to submit their accounts using approved commercial software.

As a business owner, how do you feel about your P&L becoming visible at Companies House?

Small companies and micro-entities to file profit and loss accounts but can opt out of publication. All companies will need to file accounts via commercial software with more time to prepare.

Most founders, business owners and entrepreneurs talk about revenue, some talk about profit but very few talk about cashflow and it shows.

One of the most important processes we rely on in every business we support is a simple, disciplined cashflow rhythm. Not a spreadsheet you update once a quarter but a living process that keeps you in control.

Here’s what it looks like:

📌 Weekly cash check in

What came in, what went out, what’s due, and what’s creeping up behind you (VAT, payroll, suppliers), so there are no surprises.

📌 13‑week rolling forecast

A forward view that updates every week. It tells you the truth about affordability, timing, and risk long before your bank balance does.

📌 Scenario planning

If X client pays late…

If we hire in July…

If we invest in that system…

Cashflow shows the impact instantly, it’s your decision making superpower.

📌 Debtor discipline

Cash stuck in receivables is not cash, it’s a risk. A weekly process keeps it moving.

📌 Founder clarity

Cashflow isn’t only the numbers, it’s about control. It’s knowing what’s possible, what’s safe and what needs to wait.

Founders who build this process into their operation don’t panic, they don’t guess and they don’t hope for the best. They operate with power, because they can see what’s coming.

If you want to run a calmer, stronger business, start with cashflow. It’s the process that protects everything else.

What’s one thing you are proud of this week?

Not revenue, not growth, not another client win.

In business, especially as a founder, progress rarely feels loud. Sometimes it’s:

🚀 Having a difficult conversation you’ve been avoiding

🚀 Finally reviewing your numbers instead of guessing

🚀 Putting structure into a process that used to feel chaotic

🚀 Saying no to something that doesn’t align

These are the quiet wins that build resilient businesses, and they count.

If you don’t pause to recognise them, you’ll always feel behind even when you’re moving forward. So, before the week ends, ask yourself.

What’s one thing you are proud of?

This week we are proud of planning a mid year review of our business and we are happy with our wins.

Starting a business means one thing is guaranteed, at some point, you will need to account for taxes. Understanding your tax position isn’t just compliance, it’s the foundation of your cash flow, pricing, margins, and next move.

As a UK business, there are four core taxes you may need to pay:

👉 VAT (if registered) — the one that hits cash flow the hardest

👉 Corporation Tax or Income Tax — depending on your structure

👉 PAYE — if you pay yourself or staff through payroll

👉 National Insurance — for you and any employees

None of these should ever be a surprise. Every single one is predictable when you plan for it.

When you fall behind, the cost shows up quickly:

👉 Late payment penalties stack up

👉 Interest quietly compounds

👉 Cash flow becomes unpredictable

👉 Decisions become reactive instead of strategic

And the biggest cost isn’t financial it’s psychological. It’s the mental load, the lost time, the constant background stress of the brown envelope in the post or the debt collectors.

When you know your numbers, you can:

👉 Forecast liabilities in advance

👉 Set aside cash gradually

👉 Make informed decisions (not last‑minute ones)

👉 Stay in control of your business not the other way around

The month of May reminded us that progress doesn’t always look loud.

Sometimes the biggest wins are the quiet ones, showing up consistently, having the harder conversations, staying focused when results feel slow, and keeping momentum even when motivation dips. That’s the lesson we are taking into June, consistency compounds.

Not every month will feel like a breakthrough, but every month can still build something valuable. For us, that means continuing to:

🌟 stay intentional with our time

🌟 focus on what moves the business forward

🌟 and keep refining how we support founders with clarity, structure, and strategic finance

June is a fresh page and continuation.

What’s one lesson you’re taking from May into June?

We are in a new month, June the 6th month of the year.

A lot of businesses don’t need more ideas right now. They need clearer systems, cleaner numbers, and stronger discipline around how time and money are spent.

When operations are messy, financial decisions get delayed. When finances are unclear, confidence drops. When founder, entrepreneur or business owner habits drift, the whole business feels it.

The reset is usually simple:
💡 Cut the noise.
💡 Review what is actually driving profit.
💡 Put structure around cash, cadence, and decisions.
💡 Protect the habits that keep the business steady.

Growth gets easier when the foundations are tighter.
