But the world of tax and regulations never stands still, and there are some important updates from HMRC that many self-employed people and small business owners need to know about.

One of the biggest changes is the new HMRC penalty points system for late Self Assessment submissions — and it can lead to automatic fines if deadlines are missed repeatedly.

There has been talk and online petitions calling for the UK personal tax allowance to be increased from £12,570 to £20,000. Some media and social posts have suggested HMRC has “responded” to these calls.

According to official information and recent government responses:
✔ HMRC has acknowledged the discussion,
✔ But there are currently no official plans to raise the personal allowance to £20,000. 

For now, the standard personal allowance remains £12,570 for the 2024–2025 tax year. 

This means most taxpayers can earn up to that amount tax-free before paying income tax — and any change would only happen through formal government announcements.

Au apărut discuții și petiții online pentru ca personal allowance (suma neimpozabilă) să crească de la £12,570 la £20,000. Unele postări sugerează că HMRC ar fi răspuns acestor apeluri.

Conform informațiilor oficiale:
✔ HMRC a recunoscut discuția,
✔ Dar nu există planuri oficiale de a ridica personal allowance la £20,000. 

În prezent, personal allowance rămâne £12,570 pentru anul fiscal 2024–2025.

⏰ 31 January is the key deadline for UK Self Assessment.

By this date, you must:
✔ submit your Self Assessment tax return
✔ pay any tax owed for the year
✔ make the first Payment on Account (if applicable)

⚠️ Missing the deadline can result in:
• automatic penalties
• interest on unpaid tax
• unnecessary stress

💡 Tip: submitting early gives you time to plan, check figures, and avoid surprises.

An employment contract is not just a formality. It clearly sets out your rights and obligations as an employee.

🔎 Make sure it includes:
✔ correct employer & employee details
✔ job role, responsibilities, and start date

Many people in the UK feel confused when they see a tax code on their payslip or receive a Self Assessment tax bill.
The good news? The system follows a clear logic once you understand the basics.

🇬🇧 1️⃣ What is a tax code?

Your tax code tells your employer:
• how much income you can earn tax-free
• how much tax to deduct from your salary

Example:
1257L = standard allowance of £12,570 per year.

Your tax code can change if your situation changes. Everything is managed by HMRC.

• receive a refund

If you owe tax, HMRC can:

This is called “coding out” the tax.

⚠️ It is not a penalty — just spreading last year’s tax over time.

They are not extra tax — just prepayments.
If income drops, they can be reduced.

🇷🇴 7️⃣ Ce sunt Payments on Account?
