When should you start planning your business exit?

Earlier than many owners think.

Exit planning isn’t only for when you’re ready to sell. In reality, it can take years to build a business that buyers see real value in.

That means having:
Strong financial records.
Clear systems.
Consistent profitability.
Less dependence on you as the owner.

These are the foundations that can improve valuation, support tax planning, and give buyers greater confidence.

Because if the business relies entirely on you, it may be harder to sell.

The strongest exits are usually prepared long before they happen.

Sometimes, progress starts when we stop focusing on what didn’t go to plan.

In business, setbacks can feel like closed doors.

A missed opportunity.
A tough decision.
A plan that didn’t unfold the way you expected.

But one setback doesn’t mean the journey stops.

Often, the next opportunity is already there, it just needs your focus.

This Monday, take a step back, reset, and look for the door that may already be open.

One week to go until Laps of Ambition!

The Wellers team is proud to be taking part in Laps of Ambition on Friday 26 June, supporting Oxfordshire Youth and the vital work they do for young people across Oxfordshire.

Youth work plays an important role in giving young people the support, guidance and opportunities they need to thrive.

We’re excited to lace up and do our part to help raise awareness and funds for a cause that makes such a meaningful difference.

We’re grateful to be working with Oxfordshireyouth on this initiative and can’t wait to take on the challenge next week.

There’s still time to support the team and donate here: [https://bit.ly/4fRQexD]

Founders often spend their time working in the business.

Leaders learn to spend more time working on it.

And that shift matters.

Working in the business keeps things moving day to day. Working on the business creates room for strategy, growth, and better decisions.

Many business owners only realise they’ve become the bottleneck when progress starts to slow.

The change doesn’t happen all at once.

Food for thought this Friday: Are you spending most of your time managing today, or building the business you want for tomorrow?

17/06/2026

Your numbers are giving you signals.

The real question is: are you paying attention?

Gross profit margin, cash runway, unpaid invoices, and monthly profit can show far more than turnover alone.

They help reveal whether your business is profitable, how long your cash could last, where payments are being delayed, and whether your growth is truly sustainable.

Many business owners focus on sales because sales feel like progress.

But sales don’t always show the full picture.

The right numbers help you spot issues earlier, make better decisions, and stay in control.

What’s the difference between turnover and profit?

Turnover is the total income your business generates.

Profit is what remains once your costs have been taken out.

And this is where many business owners can get caught out: High turnover doesn’t always mean strong cashflow, healthy margins, or financial stability.

Sales can show that your business is active.

Profit shows whether it’s truly sustainable.

So while increasing revenue may feel exciting, it’s your profit that helps support long-term growth, resilience, and better decision-making.

Success rarely comes from one defining moment.

More often, it comes from a choice made again and again.

Choosing to show up.
Choosing to give your best.
Choosing to keep going when the work feels difficult.
Choosing to believe that the effort still matters.

In business, progress is not always instant.

But consistent commitment can build momentum, confidence, and results over time.

This Monday, keep going. The effort you put in today may be part of the breakthrough you see later.

Not every growth opportunity is the right opportunity.

Some can help move your business forward.

Others can take up time, cash, and focus without bringing you closer to your long-term goals.

That’s why growth decisions need more than enthusiasm.
They need clarity.

Before saying yes, ask yourself:
Does this support our long-term strategy?
Do we have the capacity to deliver it properly?
Will it make the business stronger, or just busier?

Because sustainable growth isn’t about chasing every option that appears.

It’s about choosing the ones that truly fit.

Food for thought this Friday:

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity isn’t always.

That’s why the Wellers team is taking on Laps of Ambition in support of Oxfordshire Youth.

In two weeks, we’ll be walking to help raise awareness and support for young people across Oxfordshire, because we believe where someone starts in life shouldn’t decide where they finish.

The right support, guidance, and opportunity can change the direction of a young person’s future.

But too many young people still face barriers to confidence, skills, support, and opportunity.
Oxfordshire Youth is helping to change that by working with young people, communities, businesses, and decision-makers to create brighter futures.

We’re proud to play our part.

Every donation helps Oxfordshire Youth continue its vital work, strengthen youth services, and give more young people the chance to thrive.
