Recruitment agencies: do you know who’s paying your contractors?

When you place a contractor, the umbrella company behind them becomes part of your reputation. Late payments, unclear deductions or compliance gaps don’t just affect the contractor. They land on your desk.

Three questions worth asking any umbrella company you work with:

✔ Are they transparent about how pay is calculated?

✔ Can they evidence their compliance and HMRC standing?

✔ Do they pay contractors accurately and on time, every time?

If the answer to any of them is “not sure”, it’s time for a conversation.

We work alongside agencies to keep contractors paid correctly and your placements running smoothly.

When did you last read your payslip properly?

If you’re a contractor working through an umbrella company, your payslip should tell you exactly where every pound has gone: gross pay, employer’s NI, the apprenticeship levy, holiday pay, fees, PAYE and your net pay.

If any of it is unclear, ask. A good umbrella company will always be happy to explain.

At DASA Umbrella, we believe you should never have to guess what’s in your pay. Clear, accurate and on time, every week.

Not sure what you’re looking at? Message us and we’ll talk you through it.

Off sick on assignment. Do you get paid?

The rules changed in April, and it’s good news for a lot of umbrella workers.

Statutory Sick Pay used to come with two big hurdles: a three-day unpaid waiting period and an earnings threshold that left some workers with nothing at all. Both have been removed. learnsignal

What that means in practice:

✅ SSP is payable from day one of sickness, not day four

✅ Lower-paid and part-time workers can now qualify

✅ The rate is the lower of 80% of your average weekly earnings or the standard weekly rate

✅ If you’re employed by an umbrella, your umbrella pays your SSP, not the agency acaslitrg

Three quick checks:

1️⃣ Know how to report sickness to your umbrella, because delays can hold up payment

2️⃣ Check your payslip shows SSP when it’s due

3️⃣ If you think you’re owed it and it hasn’t been paid, ask your umbrella first

For agencies, it’s a good moment to check that your onboarding materials and supply chain partners reflect day-one SSP.

This week’s DASA Friday video breaks it down in under 90 seconds 🎥 Link in the comments.

Contractor life comes with a lot of freedom, but it shouldn’t mean working it all out alone.

At DASA, our contractors get more than a payslip:

✅ Accurate, on-time pay, whether you’re on umbrella or CIS

✅ A real team to talk to when you have questions

✅ Clear explanations of deductions, so you know where your money goes

✅ Practical guidance on the things that matter to contractors

And we’re teamed up with Contractor Financial to help our contractors with mortgages.

Anyone who’s tried to get a mortgage on contractor income knows it can be harder than it should be. Contractor Financial specialises in exactly that, so you get advice from people who understand how contractors earn.

Because supporting contractors shouldn’t stop when the working day does.

Placing subcontractors in construction? CIS isn’t something to get “mostly right.”

Incorrect verification, the wrong deduction rate or a missed return can quickly turn into penalties, unhappy workers and a lot of unplanned admin for your team.

At DASA CIS, we take that burden off your desk:

✅ Subcontractor verification handled properly

✅ Correct deductions applied, with clear statements

✅ Reliable, on-time payments

✅ Practical support when questions come up (and they always do)

You focus on filling roles. We’ll keep the CIS side accurate and compliant.

Your contractors are only as happy as their last payslip.

When an umbrella company gets pay wrong, pays late or can’t explain a deduction, the contractor doesn’t blame the umbrella. They blame the agency that placed them.

With the rules around umbrella companies tightening, the compliance of your supply chain matters more than ever. Choosing a partner is no longer just about price.

At DASA Umbrella, we focus on what agencies actually need:

✅ Accurate, on-time pay for your contractors

✅ Clear, easy-to-read payslips

✅ A compliant, transparent model you can stand behind

✅ A responsive team that picks up the phone

Fewer payroll queries for your consultants. More time spent placing talent.

If you’re reviewing your umbrella providers, let’s talk.

Happy Friday from Leo! 🏡

Thinking about buying a home, moving up the ladder, or investing in a buy-to-let as a contractor?

Good news: most contractors can get a mortgage.

The catch is that many high-street lenders aren’t set up to assess contractor income properly. That can mean lower borrowing amounts or declines you didn’t need to get.

The key is working with a broker who understands how contractor income works. Our partner, Jo Elwell at Contractor Financial, works with lenders who look at your day rate and contract history, not just standard payslip averages.

What you’ll usually need:
✅ Umbrella: last 3 months’ payslips
✅ CIS: 3 months’ payslips or 1 year’s tax calculations
✅ Ltd: your current contract
✅ Matching bank statements, plus proof of ID and address

As a DASA contractor, you’re entitled to a FREE initial consultation with Contractor Financial. Just quote “DASA”.
