WHEN TIME RUNS OUT, THE PENALTIES BEGIN

I was doing a bit of digging today, looking for figures from the HMRC press office, and something stood out.

Surprisingly, HMRC has not yet announced how many Self Assessment tax returns failed to be submitted by 31st January 2026.

That silence matters.

Last year, HMRC confirmed that over one million people missed the deadline. Based on that alone, it’s hard to imagine this year’s figure being anything other than significant.

Now this is where my cultural knowledge kicks in.

There’s a line in Macbeth that feels uncomfortably relevant here:

“And let each man be master of his time.”

HMRC doesn’t quite see it that way.

From 1st February, every late return automatically picks up a £100.00 penalty, simply for being late. There’s no grace period.

And if there’s any tax still to pay, HMRC then adds interest on top of the tax owed. So the penalty lands first, and the cost keeps ticking up after that.

A missed deadline doesn’t sit quietly in the background.
It compounds.

Time, once lost, becomes expensive.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning after more than 4,800 Self Assessment scams have been reported since February 2025.

Don't Give a Penny to Charity Until You Read This

Gift Aid = your £100.00 can turn into £125.00 for the charity.
That’s because the charity can claim £25.00 back from HMRC.

✅ If you’re a 40% taxpayer, you can often claim back £25.00 too.
✅ If you’re a 45% taxpayer, you can often claim back £31.25.

Earning around £100,000.00+? Gift Aid can also help reduce your adjusted net income (and in some cases protect your Personal Allowance / childcare eligibility).

Something scary is about to happen

London’s got that proper winter fog today the kind that makes everything feel like an old black-and-white film… and you just know a jump-scare is coming.
For a lot of people, the jump-scare is Self Assessment.
You’ve got just over 40 days until the 31st January 2026 deadline to file your tax return and pay what you owe (deadline is 11:59pm).
And yes, while you’re trying to buy presents, cover travel, keep the house warm, and finish the year strong… HMRC still want their money on time.
If you don’t act, the “scary part” isn’t the deadline itself:
• it’s late filing penalties
• interest
• and that horrible feeling of paying more than you needed to, just because it got left too late
If you can’t pay in full by 31st January 2026, HMRC may allow a Time to Pay plan (often set up online for bills up to £30,000).
If you want this handled properly (and calmly), we can help you:
✅ file the return
✅ calculate what’s due
✅ plan payment so it doesn’t ruin your January

Has MTD made you feel like shedding a tear?

It was reported that Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy shed a tear after hearing a heartbreaking story.

Fair enough, empathy is good.
But some of us in the accounting world are wondering…

If Rachel Reeves (Chancellor) and John-Paul Marks (HMRC Chief) sat down with the millions about to be thrown into Making Tax Digital, would they shed a tear too?

Because MTD is coming fast, quarterly updates, software costs, new rules, new stress.

Some people are ready. Many aren’t. And HMRC’s own system still looks like it needs a cuddle.

Accountants don’t cry often… but MTD is testing that theory.

Has MTD made you feel like shedding a tear?

🚨 Stop the excuses—start the filing! 🚨

Every January, HMRC hears the same lines:
❌ “I didn’t earn much.”
❌ “I thought they’d send me a bill.”
❌ “I was too busy.”

But none of these stop late filing penalties from building up.

✅ The deadline is 31 January 2026.
✅ If your bill is more than £1,000, you’ll also owe half of your 2025/26 tax up front.
✅ Can’t pay in full? HMRC’s Time to Pay lets you spread payments—but only after you’ve filed.

👉 Don’t wait until it’s too late. Atex Business Solutions can help you file fast, stay compliant, and keep HMRC off your back.
