Confidence in speaking is wildly misunderstood.
People think it comes from encouragement.
More praise, More reassurance,More “You were amazing!”
But that’s not where confidence is built.
Here’s the trap:
When every opinion has equal authority, your confidence becomes a public voting system.
And the most anxious voice in the room wins.
Great speakers don’t become confident because everyone loved them.
They become confident because they care more about what they have to say than vanity metrics. And they develop discernment.
They learn:
* whose feedback sharpens their craft
* whose feedback simply reflects personal taste
* and whose feedback should go straight into toxic waste bin
Because speaking is a performance. But not every person in the audience gets to be the director.
Choose your directors wisely.
If your work requires you to stand up, speak up, and actually move people -this is exactly the territory I work in.
