We’re just over a month away from the deadline for directors to close their company and get their money before Christmas. 🎄

To make the deadline, there are three things you can do now to prepare:

1 - Ask your accountant to start on your company’s final accounts. We need these by 4th December, and they’re usually what takes the longest.
2 - Check your last payroll and VAT returns are up to date, as these need to be sent to HMRC before the process starts.
3 - Speak to our team before 25th November so we can begin and explain what’s needed from you.

Once your company is in liquidation, your first payment is usually made within seven days, so meeting these dates gives you the best chance of having your money before Christmas.

Hospitality businesses are paying 82p in business taxes for every £1 of pre-tax profit, the highest effective tax rate of the UK sectors analysed.

With costs continuing to rise, the sector is facing significant financial pressure. There were 3,201 company insolvencies in accommodation and food services in the 12 months to August 2026, and our team is receiving liquidation enquiries from hospitality businesses.

Kirsty Mills, Senior Consultant at The Liquidation Centre, explains:

“A lot of the recent calls I’ve been having reflect just how difficult things are for some hospitality businesses. Rising wages, National Insurance and business rates are all adding up, and many are also paying 20% VAT on sales. When costs remain high and cash flow is under pressure, it can become increasingly difficult for businesses to keep on top of their financial commitments, despite their best efforts.”

If your company owes HMRC and can't pay, simply striking off the company is not an option as creditors will object and Companies House will reject the application.

The proper route is a Creditors' Voluntary Liquidation, where a licensed insolvency practitioner will sell the company assets, settle what they can, and any remaining unsecured debt is written off when the company closes.

Beefeater has announced the closure of all 106 of its restaurants, with Brewers Fayre sites closing too. The move will affect thousands of jobs across the UK and Ireland.

Richard Hunt, Director at Liquidation Centre, sees the Beefeater decision as a sign of the wider challenges facing casual dining rather than an isolated problem:

“The announced closures at Beefeater reflect the wider challenges facing the casual dining industry rather than an isolated issue. Many consumers are eating out less frequently due to the cost of living, while those who do are placing greater emphasis on value, quality and the overall dining experience. Businesses that fail to evolve alongside these changing expectations risk seeing footfall decline over time and become less profitable.

Closing underperforming sites can improve the financial health of a business, but it only creates long-term value if the remaining estate is stronger, more profitable and better aligned with what customers want."

Whether you're the employer or an employee of a company going into liquidation, it's important to clearly understand the process and what can be claimed.

When a company goes into liquidation, employees are typically made redundant. The liquidator writes to them with a case reference number, which they use to claim through the government's Redundancy Payments Service.

What employees are entitled to claim:
- Statutory redundancy pay
- Unpaid wages, up to eight weeks
- Holiday pay owed
- Notice pay
