HMRC IS ABOUT TO START SIGNING UP MTD NO-SHOWS

From September, HMRC will begin automatically signing up sole traders and landlords who should have joined Making Tax Digital in April 2026 but have not registered.

If HMRC believes your qualifying income exceeded £50,000 in 2024/25, you could receive a letter or digital message confirming that you have been enrolled.

Automatic sign-up does not mean HMRC will complete the work for you. You will still need to:

✅ Check that HMRC has the correct businesses listed
✅ Keep digital records from 6 April 2026
✅ Submit quarterly updates
✅ File your 2026/27 tax return using MTD-compatible software

If you have stopped trading, ceased renting property or believe you should be exempt, act now before HMRC creates the obligations.

Missed the first update? The position can normally be caught up in the next cumulative submission, but MTD is not optional.
